Part-Time (24 hours per week) All Shifts APPROXIMATE PAY RANGE: $50.51 - $62.13 Under direct supervision of the Section Leader, the Clinical Laboratory Scientist performs clinical laboratory testing and assists in promoting quality of service based on accuracy and timeliness in reporting results. Under general supervision, the Clinical Laboratory Scientists are responsible for assisting the department manager in the effective operation of the laboratory through the coordination of all activities in their respective responsibilities. DEMONSTRATES COMPETENCY IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS: Ability to function in all areas of the clinical laboratory: blood bank, chemistry, hematology, coagulation, microbiology, serology/immunology. Responsible for performing high-complexity testing. Follows established procedures to perform Routine and STAT clinical laboratory testing. Notifies patient care unit and/or physician of critical lab values according to policy. Follows established quality control procedures for all tests including initiation of remedial action in out-of-control situations. Keeps abreast of reference and critical values for neonates, infants, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients so that the appropriate physician notification takes place in the event of the recovery of critical values related to specific age groups. Performs all Laboratory Information system (LIS) functions necessary to complete patient testing and specimen processing. Consults with other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities. Maintains a clean and organized work area and follows standard precautions at all times. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. Manages and operates laboratory equipment safely and correctly. Participates in proficiency testing events when requested to do so by the Section Leader and follows CLIA guidelines. (Title 42, CFR 493) Demonstrates knowledge of new testing methods, products, and instrumentation; remains informed on all current technologies. Maintains current knowledge of hospital and lab policy, CAP, TJC, and CLIA. Performs all routine maintenance procedures and calibration of clinical analyzers throughout the laboratory. Other Duties: Assist in maintaining reagents, supplies inventories, and help put them away for appropriate storage. Able to demonstrate the ability to be flexible, organized, and function under stressful situations. Participates in continuing education programs and consults current technical literature to keep abreast of changes in the field. Promotes good public relations through productive and professional interaction with patients, physicians, and other hospital staff. Able to demonstrate the value of team concept on a consistent basis. Demonstrates proficiency in performing venipuncture, and capillary collection techniques. Performs and documents quality control according to clinical area guidelines and takes remedial action when necessary. Documents and alerts Section Leader to unresolved problems. Participates in the continuing Quality Improvement (CQI) process in the clinical laboratory and throughout the hospital if called on to do so. Participates in researching and developing new procedures.
