American Humane is seeking an experienced Senior Accountant who will perform general accounting operations and internal control duties for American Humane, including recording daily accounting transactions, preparing journal entries for the monthly and year-end financial close, monitoring the operating cash balance, and reconciling general ledger accounts. The Senior Accountant reports directly to the Accounting Manager.
Role expectations:
Demonstrate an analytical and detail-oriented approach to work and an in-depth knowledge of accounting principles to effectively conduct daily accounting work.
Take a collaborative and supportive approach to working with colleagues across programs and departments to ensure timely and accurate tracking of financial transactions.
Develop a solid understanding of American Humane’s mission, programming, organizational priorities and core values.
Responsibilities:
Responsible for recording daily accounting transactions, including preparing general ledger journal entries as part of the monthly financial and fiscal year-end close.
Reconcile general ledger account balances on a monthly basis.
Work with the certification programs to track outstanding accounts receivable balances and help to facilitate collection on overdue balances.
Perform expenditure reviews as part of the weekly accounts payable process and monthly corporate credit card reconciliations.
Monitor the operating cash balance on a daily basis and update the daily cash log.
Assist the Controller and Accounting Manager in preparing the audit and IRS Form 990 work papers and providing support throughout the audit.
Work with the Finance team to implement a new financial system in the upcoming year.
Provide accounting support to international programs.
Generate revenue invoices as requested by Development and the certification programs.
Respond to accounting inquiries posed by other departments.
Maintain a strong control environment ensuring compliance with policies and procedures.
Perform ad-hoc financial projects requested by Accounting Manager, Controller, and CFO.
Essential experience, knowledge, skills and abilities:
Bachelor’s degree in accounting required, CPA preferred
3+ years of accounting experience (preferably in public accounting, an association, professional society, or other non-profit)
Solid understanding of GAAP concepts
Advanced facility with Excel spreadsheets
Proven track record of results
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with competing deadlines
Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills
Ability to independently prioritize and manage multiple tasks, work independently, and grasp concepts quickly
Detail-oriented with the ability to think critically
Enjoys working in a small organization, wearing many hats
Ability to work collaboratively with other team members across all departments, and at all levels of the organization
Maintain confidentiality and use discretion when dealing with sensitive information.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook and Teams.

Physical demands and work environment:
Position will be a hybrid of in-office and remote-telework based out of the Washington, DC office location and regular telework schedule based on organizational policy and manager discretion. Must be DC-based, no exceptions.
Must be comfortable with animals, especially dogs, in the office and at events.
Minimal travel may be possible.
While performing the duties of this position, the employee will regularly be required to:
Sit or stand for extended periods;
Look at and work off of a computer screen for extended periods; and
Talk, hear and exchange information over the telephone, virtually and in person.
