Please note that this is an on-call, as needed position.
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under general supervision, assist in providing babysitting services to toilet-trained children of adults attending special program classes, events, or workshops; ensures children's safety and well-being; leads games and activities; greets parents and verifies that parent signs their child in and out of the classroom; and administers minor first aid.
**NOTE: There will not be a formal testing phase for this opportunity. Qualified applicants may be called to interview with District personnel on an as needed basis. For this reason you are encouraged to highlight your related training and experience as much as possible in the Work History and Supplemental Question sections.
Employment Standards
• Supervises children at play, applying limit-setting and disciplinary approaches; maintains safe play conditions and alert parents regarding unsafe conditions.
• Greets parents and verifies that each parent signs their child in and out of the classroom.
• Uses positive reinforcement techniques (e.g., gives children praise).
• Performs light housekeeping duties and maintain room in a safe, sanitary and orderly condition.
• Assists in providing and environment which will enhance maximum physical, emotional and cognitive development of children.
• Assists children with basic hygiene procedures as necessary; observes and evaluates health needs of children and takes appropriate action.
• Takes children to the restroom; may call parents to assist.
• Contacts teacher when assistance is needed (e.g., child sick, serious behavior problem, or needs to go to the bathroom and Babysitter cannot leave children.)
• Organizes activities and supervises children during inside and outdoor activities
• Sets out toys, books and games for children of various ages.
• Tells and reads stories, sings songs, plays records and prepares materials for arts and crafts and other play activities.
• Uses flash cards to demonstrate alphabet and numbers.
• May operate television, DVD/VCR, tape recorder, copier and telephone.
• Some positions may communicates and/or interprets in Spanish to child's parents and to child as needed.
• Performs other related duties as directed.
Examples of Duties
EDUCATION:
Completion of eighth grade. Graduation from high school is preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
Experience in supervising preschool and elementary age children is desirable.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
A valid first aid certificate, comparable to the American Red Cross First Aid Certificate must be presented to the Personnel Commission Department prior to or within five (5) months of employment.
The ability to speak and read in English. The ability to speak and read in Spanish is preferred.
Candidates must be at least 18 years old to qualify.

ENVIRONMENT:
Employees in this classification work indoors in classroom, nursery and/or playrooms, as well as outside on the playground; frequent toileting of toddlers, washing hands, regular exposure to a moderate level of noise, works in direct contact with the public and students; may work a flexible schedule and may work evenings and/or weekends.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Employees in this classification stand, sit, walk, lift and carry up to 25 lbs and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs or more with assistance, carry, stoop, repeatedly bend, use fingers, use both hands and/or legs simultaneously, push, pull, maintain balance, stoop/bend, kneel, reach over head, have rapid mental/muscular coordination, speak clearly, hear normal voice conversation, have depth perception, have color vision and can distinguish shades, and must see small details distances.
