Job Description
Overview of Department & Mentor
The Neuroimaging program under the Department of Neurology researches methods for advancing image acquisition techniques and analysis of imaging data. The Sati Laboratory focuses on the development of novel imaging biomarkers, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques, and artificial intelligence (AI) methods that strive to improve the clinical care offered to those impacted by neurological disorders. Role Summary & Objectives
Under direct mentorship, the Research Intern will assist in performing laboratory tasks and procedures to develop technical expertise in one or more areas relevant to research projects. The Research Intern will participate in assisting various aspects of research, including but not limited to: problem and solution investigation, experimental design, validation of results, and reporting of findings. The Research Intern will be involved in data analysis and review with weekly presentation of findings to the team.
Role Activities & Timeline
Within the first month of internship, the intern will familiarize themselves with the lab, research surrounding projects and onboard successfully. The next month will be ramping up the intern’s involvement in projects, ranging from computer programming, data analysis in programs such as Excel, R, python and more, graph and Powerpoint creation and presentation in lab meetings. This will continue for the third month as the intern gains proficiency in the aforementioned. In the following months, 3-6 and beyond, a student can continue their research and if feasible submit their own projects to the lab for critical approval. This can include participation in publication, research abstracts, and other methods of dissemination of personal research under the lab
Depending on the intended timeline of the internship and areas of interest, the intern will be responsible for one or more of the following:
- Assisting lab fellows in conducting research tasks.
- Conducting data quality checks including image quality assurance (QA) and image segmentation.
- Document and present results to team members.
- Communicate progress, challenges, and suggestions to team members.
- With sufficient programming background, assist in the implementation and analysis of data processing pipelines.
Qualifications
Required Education & Experience
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Must have a High School Diploma or GED.
- Must reside in the greater Los Angeles area or surrounding cities while conducting all activities related to the intern appointment.
Preferred Education & Experience
- Current undergraduate pursuing a degree in Mathematics, Biology, Computer Science, Statistics, Neurosciences, Computational Biology, or related life and computational sciences strongly preferred.
- Applicants with an interest in graduate studies of related fields are highly preferred.
- Strong interest in pursuing a career in life and computational sciences.
- Experience programming in languages such as Python, C++, Java, and bash.
