FY25 - HEALTH CARE ANCILLARY INSTRUCTOR, NON-CREDIT

(Full Time, Tenure Track C Basis)

A 20-year vision became a reality for a dedicated group of residents in February 1967 when the Los Angeles Board of Education approved plans to build a community college at the corner of Western Avenue and Imperial Highway in Los Angeles. On September 11, 1967, Los Angeles Southwest College officially opened its doors with 600 students and 22 full-time faculty members. Since then LASC has established itself as an educational and cultural hub of the southern part of Los Angeles and surrounding communities. In addition to classroom instruction, students are exposed to a myriad of learning experiences to broaden their horizons, to expand their options and alternatives, to develop an appreciation for the academic work ethic, and to understand intellectual pursuits. LASC graduates are among the most successful — ranging from medical professionals and professional athletes to recording artists and educators. Currently, LASC term enrollment exceeds 8,500. As the college develops new partnerships with local schools and community agencies, we continue to “Embrace the Spirit of Excellence and the Vision of Change.”

LASC is located in southwest, Los Angeles, approximately 20 minutes south of downtown Los Angeles, and 15 minutes east of the Pacific Ocean.

Los Angeles Community College District’s Board of Trustees gave final approval to the Mission Statement. It had previously been approved by LASC’s Strategic Planning Committee, Academic Senate and College Council.

LASC offers noncredit certificate programs in Medical Assisting and In-Home Health Support Service. In accordance with its mission as a community college, LASC Faculty members are expected to facilitate student learning by designing varied and comprehensive learning opportunities. The regular weekly teaching load is 24 hours, program support 6 additional hours for a total of 30-hrs weekly. We are specifically seeking applicants who will actively contribute to the growth of the medical assisting program, and who have the expertise and enthusiasm to collaborate with faculty and other stakeholders in developing partnerships with the local medical community for our students to engage in administrative/ clinical externships. Evening and/or weekend classes may be scheduled based on department needs.

Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Instruct and assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials and effective teaching methods including online courses, and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions.
• Teaching may occur during the following hours: day, evening or weekend via face to face, online, or hybrid. Classes may be assigned at one of LASC's noncredit course locations throughout the service area.
• Collaborate with faculty and staff on WIOA Title II grant requirements to measure and interpret student pre- and post-test scores and align diagnostic assessments with noncredit curriculum.
• Develop, update and revise curriculum to align with the regional workforce needs and credit program pathway preparedness.
• Participate in the development and assessment of Student Learning Outcomes (SLO's) and Program Learning Outcomes (PLO's).
• Participate in Guided Pathways and Program Review.
• Collaborate with employers, local Workforce Development Boards, academic and CTE faculty, design and update competency-based noncredit vocational curriculum and programs.
• Collaboration with faculty, to establish competencies and benchmarks to track students program progress and skill attainment.
• Maintain regular scheduled office hours to meet the needs of students.
• Maintain professional and ethical academic standards including maintaining accurate records in accordance with the policies, rules, regulations, and procedures of the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD).
• Participate in college and department activities including Accreditation, Program Review, and student/program learning outcome assessments, curriculum development, and other activities and committees to promote department, program department and student success.
• Coordinate and facilitate advisory committees, recruitment days, employer panels, and targeted job fairs.
• Represent Los Angeles Southwest College in California Adult Education Programs, activities and faculty workshops.
• Create active, inclusive learning environments and curricula that welcome and engage all students, incorporating instructional technologies and supplemental course materials, as appropriate, to improve student learning.
• Participate in professional development activities and maintain current. knowledge in the discipline through professional development activities.
• Develop and support the implementation of workforce preparation courses and short-term, training programs aligned to WIOA Integrated Education and Training programs that are contextualized within specific industries and/or guided pathway initiatives.
• Actively engage in participatory governance related to academic and professional matters.
• Other duties as assigned.

• Bachelor's degree or higher and two years of professional experience*, OR Associate degree and six years of professional experience*.
• Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background as well as accommodating any disabilities of community college faculty, students and staff;

*Professional experience is required even when the applicant possesses a master's degree. The professional experience required must be directly related to the faculty member's teaching assignment.

Pursuant to LACCD Board of Trustee's Policy 2900, employees must be fully vaccinated or have an approved exemption. LACCD employees are required to provide their vaccination status in compliance with the LACCD Board of Trustees' policy. Newly hired employees will be required to provide their vaccination status prior to position start date.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

• Minimum of 2 years’ experience working as a medical assistant in an ambulatory medical practice setting or higher healthcare professional role.

• Curriculum development- Paid experience developing curriculum (courses, certificates, addenda and SLOs) in a California community college or institute of higher education.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
• Create contextualized, short-term courses and certificates in collaboration with industry and employer partners.
• Experience with recruiting and managing industry advisory committees for curriculum input, workforce development and employment.
• Extensive experience instructing and assisting in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through workforce aligned/contextualized course materials, effective teaching methodologies, and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions.
• Experience with leading presentations using appropriate technological resources.
• Familiarity with Open Educational Resources.
• Knowledge of adult learning theory, critical thinking, metacognition, and diverse teaching and learning methodologies that promote the active involvement of adult students in the learning experience.
• Experience working with employer and industry partners to place students in cooperative work experience or internships.
• Knowledge of local economic and labor market conditions and trends, and accepted standard employment practices.
• Experience in utilizing a learning center/lab setting for instructional enhancement.

The Los Angeles Community College District determines placement on the pay scale depending on verified education and employment history. Current starting annual salary range is from: $72.990 - $135,620 for the 10-month academic year depending on education and experience. The doctoral differential is $4,610 per academic year.
