POSITION SUMMARY: The Department of Biological Sciences at Moravian University invites applications for a professor of practice position in Biochemistry and Microbiology starting Spring semester of 2025 (January) through the end of Spring semester 2026 (May). Over this 3-semester position, the faculty member will be responsible for teaching our 300-level biochemistry II course (lecture and two laboratory sections), a 200-level microbiology course for biology majors (lecture and laboratory), and a 200-level microbiology course for nursing majors (lecture and two laboratory sections). See below for schedule/timetable. Additional teaching responsibilities will depend on the interests of the candidate and the needs of the department. Teaching will be fully in-person on our main campus in Bethlehem, PA. Additionally, there may be an opportunity to conduct research with undergraduate students, for well-qualified candidates.
Biochemistry I and II, as a sequence, typically enroll advanced-level undergraduates interested in pre-professional programs (pre-med, PA, dentistry, vet. science, etc.), as well as biology, biochemistry, and chemistry majors. Biochemistry I covers the structure and function of proteins, carbohydrates, nucleic acids, and lipids with laboratory experiences emphasizing basic biochemical methods (pipetting, buffers, UV-Vis spectroscopy, SDS-PAGE, and spreadsheet use). The prerequisites for Biochemistry I are an introductory biology course as well as two semesters of organic chemistry. Biochemistry II lecture topics include membrane proteins, membrane transport, biosignaling, bioenergetics, and metabolism. The laboratory component has typically focused on a semester-long protein biochemistry project, covering techniques such as protein expression and purification from E. coli, SDS-PAGE, western blotting, and fluorescence and UV-Vis spectroscopy, however, the successful candidate may run the laboratory component as they see fit.
Both microbiology courses (for biology and nursing majors) cover the nature and activities of the major groups of microorganisms from structures and functions, to growth and control of growth, as well as microbial genetics, biochemistry, and ecology. Both beneficial and pathogenic microbes are investigated, with special attention paid to antibiotic resistance and the immunological responses of host organisms to infection. The health sciences version focuses more on clinical applications of microbiology to human health and disease, while the majors version focuses on a broader range of microbial interactions in the natural environment. The laboratories of both versions cover aseptic technique, culturing, staining, microscopy, isolation and identification of microbes, quantifying microbes, biochemical tests, and antibiotic susceptibility testing, with different, small, inquiry-based projects in each version, but again, the successful candidate will have considerable latitude in the specific structure of the laboratory portion of these courses

- 2 general biology laboratories or a writing-intensive seminar in the candidate's specialty
- 1 other course depending on needs and candidate's specialty
Spring 2026
- BIOL 206 Microbiology for Health Sciences (70 min., 3x/week)
- Two, 3-hour BIOL 206 laboratories (each meets for 1.5 hours, 2x a week)
- 1 general biology laboratory or a writing-intensive seminar in the candidate's specialty
- 1 other course depending on needs and candidate's specialty

- Minimum: MS in biochemistry, microbiology, or related biological science
- Preferred: PhD (or ABD) in biochemistry, microbiology, or related biological science, with successful teaching experience beyond the TA level
