This Training section recruitment is an Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) internal recruitment. ONLY applications from current, qualified OCFA Fire Cadet and Reserve Firefighter personnel will be accepted.

The Fire Drill Grounds Intern is an unpaid internship with the OCFA Training Section. Under the supervision of an Assistant Fire Training Officer, the Intern will be able to experience the diversity of the day-to-day demands of the Authority's fire training drill grounds. The duration of this internship will be approximately six (6) months.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Internships are designed to expose students/non-professionals to a wide variety of aspects of a chosen field. Incumbents perform routine tasks within a procedural framework established by higher-level employees, referring all variations to the supervisor. Work is reviewed on a regular basis for adherence to direction and policy, and overall results. Incumbents in this classification are temporary, at-will employees, and unpaid volunteers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

(These duties are intended to be representative sample of the duties performed by the class.)

Assist Training Officer and Training Section staff members with a variety of manual labor support duties as assigned
Inspect, repair, and clean training equipment and fire ground props
Participates in fire drill ground cleaning and maintenance; may work independently on assigned projects
Clean heavy equipment and small vehicles
Store and arrange items; maintains a clean and organized inventory storage area
Attends meetings as appropriate
Pick-up and deliver training equipment and supplies
Performs other duties of a similar nature or level

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (position requirements at entry):

Must be at least 18 years of age
Possession of a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED)
No experience required

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS (position requirements at entry):

Possession of a valid Class C Driver License or out of state equivalent

HIGHLY DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Current OCFA Cadet or Reserve Firefighter
Graduation from a Fire Academy
Seeking a career in the Fire Service

KNOWLEDGE (position requirements at entry):
Knowledge of:

Small hand tools
Basic computer skills including knowledge of Word and Excel
Safe driving practices and techniques; applicable California Vehicle Codes
Care, maintenance, and operation of vehicles

SKILLS (position requirements at entry):
Skill in:

Operating various types equipment, small hand tools, personal computer, office machines, and motor vehicle
Basic vehicle and ground maintenance
Following directions
Working independently
Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing
Learning to apply OCFA policies, procedures, rules and regulations
Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
Providing quality customer service

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must possess mobility to work in a drill ground environment and in the field; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to medium physical work; to sit, stand, and walk on level, uneven, or slippery surfaces; frequently reach, twist, turn, kneel, bend, stoop, squat, crouch, grasp and make repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; to climb and descend from ladders to reach shelving, and to operate a motor vehicle and visit various County sites; vision including color vision to inspect supplies and operate equipment. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas and driving to various County sites. Finger dexterity is needed to operate equipment. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects averaging a weight of 50 pounds or heavier weights with the appropriate equipment on a frequent/occasional basis, in all cases with the use of proper equipment and/or assistance from other staff.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Interns work in OCFA buildings, facilities, and in the field and are exposed to loud and excessive noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, hazardous physical substances and odors, and fumes, dust and air contaminants.

Before an employee is hired, he/she must successfully complete pre-employment requirements including, but not limited to fingerprinting and background check, reference check, DMV check, licensure/certification check, Oath of allegiance to the United States of America and the State of California, and proof of eligibility to work in the United States in accordance with Immigration and Reform Control Act of 1986. All intern offers are contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment medical exam including a drug screen through the OCFA's designated physician.
