Job Abstract

The Primary School is creating a new school model that brings together all of the adults in a child’s life, including parents, educators, and medical and mental health providers, starting from a very early age. We recognize the entrenched racism that exists within our public systems and the unjust impact this has had on families of color. Our aim is that children and families most impacted by systemic poverty and racism receive the multidisciplinary support they deserve to be well, learn, and thrive.

Long-term, we hope to create a game-changing model that can be replicated across the country. As we continue to learn and grow, we plan to share what we’ve learned and pursue policy and systems change on a local, state, and national level. We are supported by a growing coalition of philanthropic partners, building on the generous support of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

Our approach has three defining characteristics:

• We start early. We start working with children as young as 12 months and provide full-time school starting at age three to reach them at a critical stage in development.
• We partner with parents. We believe that when parents thrive, children thrive, so we support the wellness and growth of parents alongside the growth of their children.
• We integrate services. Our unique model unites health care and education, building a multi-disciplinary team and holistic system of care around a child’s full needs.

In 2016, we opened our flagship school in East Palo Alto, California, with our first class of four year olds. We have grown to serve over 400 children and their families through our Early Family Foundations program, parent wellness program, full-day preschool, and elementary/middle school, which will grow through eighth grade. In 2021, we opened our second site in the East Bay.

We are continuing to grow our East Palo Alto site and are excited to launch 7th grade for our 2024-2025 school year. In our school program, we currently serve over 400 students across two preschool grades (3 and 4 year olds) and kindergarten through sixth grade. Integrated into our program are the other core components of our model including our parent program - partnering closely with parents throughout their child’s development and providing wellness programming for caregivers; our Early Family Foundations program - coordinating early developmental screenings and intervention services; and our medical home partnerships - working with existing health care providers in the community to coordinate care for children.

The Behavior Interventionist is an experienced educator specializing in the behavioral, social, and emotional needs of students. Supporting our Mind, Body, and Soul work grounded in the Neurosequential Model for Education, they plan and deliver Tier 2 social skills groups and 1:1 sessions, and lead the Behavior Response Team. Managed by the Dean of Student Services and collaborating closely with Elementary and Middle School Deans, the Behavior Interventionist fosters a safe and respectful school culture through proactive activities, recess supervision, and implementation of the school's discipline policy (e.g., structured recess, acts of service, restorative conversations). Understanding the power of play, they regularly incorporate playfulness into their work. The Behavior Interventionist is skilled at creating a safe, joyful, and rigorous environment.

This role reports to the Dean of Student Services and will be a part of the Student Services team. This position follows an instructional calendar.

• Supporting data driven cycles
• Implementation of approximately 720 minutes of Tier 2 interventions per week as set by Manager/Clinician, with input from Interventionist
• Plan, learn, and modify curriculum, including Zones of Regulation and Social Thinking; deliver services and create visuals (Tier 2 and Tier 3) in alignment with student’s goals
• Manage caseload of approximately 20-30 students each cycle of interventions (3 cycles per school year)
• Support the extension of Tier 3 interventions, as set by Manager/Clinician, with input from Interventionist
• Facilitate Risk Assessments and input data (Level 3)
• Facilitation of proactive productive social games (interventions) during recess and fostering a supportive environment during this unstructured time.
• Behavior Response Team (BRT) responder for Level 2 & 3 behaviors (ex. Restorative conversations, My Calming Plans, etc.), document incidents and connect with families or teachers on next steps.
• Communicating and supporting grade level/classroom specific planning tasks and to-dos
• Commit to ongoing professional development in supporting students with special needs
• Serve as behavior/soul specialist while participating in aspects of MTSS, including Coordination of Services Team (COST), Student Services Team, Behavior Response Team (BRT), etc.
• Support Deans and teachers with students in COST as Case Lead
• Collaborate with School Deans and Administrators through participation in weekly Behavior Response Team (BRT) Huddles and as needed consultations

• You believe that every child can demonstrate growth and reach their unique potential when they have the right support in place
• You have a minimum of 3 years of experience as a classroom teacher (ideally within two grades of your desired position) and hold deep and diverse social emotional competence.
• You believe in supporting the team and recognize that this work is only achievable when we work collaboratively
• Training in Special Education and Restorative Justice is not required but is a plus. What is required is an interest in professional development focused on meeting the needs of diverse learners.
• You celebrate and honor the importance of student culture and diversity in lessons.
• You enthusiastically utilize data to understand what a student needs and to personalize instruction accordingly.

Annual salary range begins at $74,000; compensation is commensurate with qualifications and experience, plus excellent health benefits (medical, dental, and vision), 401k retirement plan, flexible spending account (FSA), dependent care FSA, and generous paid time off, including a competitive paid parental leave benefit. TPS will cover 93% of the total premium cost for individual team members in our HMO and PPO plans, and 95% for individual team members in our HDHP plan. TPS also covers 50% of enrolled partners and/or dependents' costs on all three of our medical plans (HMO,PPO, HDHP).
