POSITION TITLE: LITERACY COACH
LOCATION: HUBBELL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
REPORTS TO: SUPERVISOR OF TEACHING & LEARNING
SUMMARY: Works cooperatively with literacy teachers and staff and is
responsible for assisting in the planning, developing, implementing, coordinating and
evaluating of literacy initiatives. Researches appropriate assessment and instructional
practices. From research, provides professional development for teachers and
administrators K-12.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties, as assigned.
Provide comprehensive training and on-going support in the assessment and instruction
of reading to staff, including literacy teachers/coaches, instructional support teachers,
interns, volunteers, classroom teachers, administrators, and others as designated, through
in-service, coaching and modeling.
Monitor and coordinate the administration of literacy assessments and the provision of
literacy instruction to students.
When a pilot model is in use, oversee the work of and assist the pilot project staff on
development, implementation, and evaluation of the pilot project. Upon completion of a
pilot project, oversee implementation of the outcomes district-wide.
Monitor, collect, and analyze all needed data on a school and district-wide basis.
Coordinate longitudinal studies of outcomes.
Work with library personnel and staff to develop and implement procedures to manage
and maintain literacy collections.
Regularly meet with literacy teachers/coaches, instructional support teachers, interns and
volunteers; update skills of these providers regularly.
Regularly meet with program administrators and provide status reports of literacy
initiatives.
Coordinate the community volunteers program at the elementary schools.
Participate in state committees regarding literacy assessment and instruction, as needed.
Participate in district-wide committees, as requested.
Prepare parent workshops for building staff to present to parents; present parent
workshops, as needed.
Coordinate and process orders for materials; complete budget work, as directed.
Conduct literacy assessments and provide literacy instruction to students, as needed.
Maintain a cooperative working relationship with all staff.
Communicate with parents, as needed.
Be proficient in the use of computer programs.
Other duties, as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises classroom and students (volunteers and parent helpers where appropriate).
Performs general supervisory duties as scheduled.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Master’s degree required
Master’s in reading preferred
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid Connecticut State Certification
Reading Recovery certification preferred
Experience presenting teacher/administrator in-service
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze and interpret periodicals, professional journals, technical
procedures and governmental regulations. Ability to write memos, reports and
correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from
groups of administrators, staff, parents and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers,
common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw
and interpret bar graphs. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts,
interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability
to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
COMPUTER SKILLS:
Basic knowledge and experience with standard hardware and software applications.
Ability to use computer for E-mail, word processing, accounting, databases and
presentations.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in
situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of
instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to apply knowledge of current research and teaching competencies to
instructional program. Ability to plan and implement lessons based on school objectives
and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and
maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents. Skill in oral and written
communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and
Board of Education policies and the code of professional responsibility for teachers.

output of other people. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision,
such as to read handwritten or typed material and the ability to adjust focus. The position
requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with
the public and other staff.
