TEACHER - SPECIAL DAY CLASS
DEPARTMENT: School REPORTS TO: Principal

BASIC FUNCTION:
To provide learning experiences and classroom instruction for children identified as handicapped and having intensive needs that cannot be remediated in the regular program with the use of supplementary aids or services.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.
Provide instruction to handicapped children using appropriate techniques, equipment, physical facilities, instructional materials and supplies.
Review all the available psychological academic, medical, health and social information related to the student.
Evaluate each student=s social and academic needs and develop and Individual Educational Program (IEP).
Initiate, review and modify and students IEP, as needed, during the year.
Coordinate the special class program with the regular class.
Consults with school personnel and parents regarding student=s and learning behavior.
Advises school personnel regarding the special class; its purpose, structure and program eligibility.
Confers with appropriate resources and specialists from the Special Services Department.
Consults with building principal regarding performance and skills of instructional assistant.
Enhances professional standards by participating in seminars, workshops,. And classes in special education and district staff development.
Continues independent professional growth through research review.
Maintains files of special education students.
Maintains reports as required by federal, state and district regulations.

ENTRANCE QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor of Arts Degree in appropriate area and at least one (1) year of regular classroom experience.
ABILITIES:
Develop needs assessment and individual learning plans for students enrolled in program.
Read and analyze and interpret periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations.
Write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
Effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff and the general public.
Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Apply current research and theory to program.
Plan and implement lessons based on district and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.
Establish and maintain effective relationships with staff, students, peers and parents.
Speak clearly and concisely in oral and written communication.

CREDENTIALS, LICENSES, REGISTRATION:
A valid California credential in Special Education.
A valid California driver=s license.
