Welcome to the Whittier City School District, a Transitional Kindergarten through 8th grade school district with eight elementary schools, two middle schools, and one K-8 school. We serve approximately 6,300 students who matriculate into the Whittier Union High School District. Whittier City School District offers advanced technology programs, including 1:1 devices, Apple TV, and innovative instruction to support all students. Whittier City School District is one of seven local districts that join together in a Special Education Cooperative (SELPA) serving Whittier area special needs students. SAFETY AIDE
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the supervision of the principal or designee, assists in ensuring student safety by monitoring campus buildings and grounds, controlling access to the campus, assuring student compliance with school policies and performing related work as required.
REQUIREMENTS
Demonstrates an understanding, patient and receptive attitude towards students of varied age groups;
Communicates effectively in oral and written English;
Understands and carries out oral and written directions;
Displays sufficient stamina to permit performance of duties in inclement weather;
Tactful and helpful under unfavorable or difficult situations;
Demonstrates empathy when working with students having special needs;
Maintain routine records
Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships with children and adults.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Duties of the safety aide are not limited to, but may include the following:
Assisting with student control on grounds and in buildings, including halls, walkways, cafeteria/eating areas, parking lots, campus entrances and restrooms
Providing appropriate leadership for students to earn their respect and cooperation in following directions and school rules
Checking students’ passes for authorization to be out of class
Checking visitors’ passes and directing general public to the administration office, in accordance with campus sign-in procedures.
Escorting law enforcement officers and search dogs
Investigating and reporting incidents of persons loitering on or near the campus and students leaving or congregating off school grounds without permission.
Identifying, correcting and/or reporting safety hazards that may compromise student/staff safety.
Monitoring student behavior, deterring and modifying inappropriate student behaviors of a relatively minor nature and reporting serious infractions to school administrator(s) for possible disciplinary action.
Operating a two-way radio to communicate with school administrators, staff, and other campus personnel.
Monitoring parking lots for proper parking procedures and traffic flow, opening and securing gates.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school graduation or equivalent and work experience, demonstrate ability to work effectively with middle school students.
KNOWLEDGE OF basic methods of individual and group supervision, interpersonal skills using tact, patience, courtesy, and health and safety regulations. ABILITY TO monitor campus to maintain order in a middle school setting. Be able to assure student compliance with school and District policies and regulations. Ability to learn, interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Ability to perform duties with patience, tact, good judgment and composure within established guidelines. The Safety Aide is able to observe situations and accurately determine an effective course of action.
OTHER
Person performing service in this position classification may exert 20 to 50 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move object.

Under general supervision of the principal; escorts and supervises children safely before and after school, monitors and directs parent’s vehicles; maintains friendly day-to-day contact with parents, children and other staff, be able to assist with campus supervision, able to respond quickly to emergency situations, and does other related work as required.
