CSW Paramedic Intern Trainee
Trainee: $21.22 per hour
Up to 20 hours per week
The mission of the Pasadena Fire Department is to provide protection of life, property, and the environment from the effects of fires, medical emergencies, and hazards; we engage the community in our mission through progressive community outreach.

Individuals selected for this position will be sponsored to participate in an upcoming Paramedic training program starting in January 2025. The City will pay the cost of the program. Additionally, all city service workers (CSW) will work 20 hours per week with PFD. The 20 hours will consist of riding as the 3rd person on a Pasadena Fire Rescue Ambulance, training to learn department operations and culture, as well as tutoring sessions to assist with Paramedic curriculum.
The entire program is expected to last 9 months.
Aftersuccessful completion of paramedic school (National Registry and Local Accreditation), the CSW may be eligible to advance directly to the Chief’s interview for a Firefighter Trainee.
EXAMINATION PROCESS The City of Pasadena Human Resources Department and the Pasadena Fire Department have collaborated to select the best individuals suited to become a city service worker. Read the following information carefully.

All applications must be submitted byJune 6, 2024. All certificates or licenses must be submitted to the City of Pasadena portal. You must attach documents to your City of Pasadena application. Hard copies will not be accepted.
Tentative Interview Panel Dates: week of June 24, 2024
Tentative appointment date to position: Early November 2024
Paramedic school begins: Early January 2025
Essential Functions
The CSW Paramedic Intern with the Fire Department must be able to perform essential functions, including:
Respond to emergency calls, which may include Medical, fire, rescue, hazardous materials, or other emergencies.
Administer first aid and assist in medical incidents in accordance with LA County protocols.
Participate in training, practices and be familiar with the operations of all fire department medical equipment, vehicles, motorized equipment, and specialized tools used in suppression and rescue operations performed by the department.

Trainable ability to be trained instructed and supervised in aspects of emergency medical procedures, and fire suppression.
Qualification Guidelines
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
Must be 18 years of age or older at the time of appointment.
Possession of a valid Class C Driver's License.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must submit an employment application to the City of Pasadena by June 6, 2024.
Applicants must possess a California issued EMT certification or a valid National Registry issued EMT certification (must be attached to the application during submission).
Applicants must possess a NFPA California State Fire Fighter I certificate issued by the State Board of Fire Services (must be attached to the application during submission).

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preference will be given to Pasadena residents. Proof of residency (valid California driver’s license or identification card or copy of utility bill) will be required at the time of applying and will also be verified at the time of appointment.
Preference will be given to applicants involved in Pasadena Fire Department programs: (Fire Explorers or EMS Reserve Program, Local Fire Academy Sponsorship)
Possession of an Associates of Arts or Associate of Science in Fire Science or above is desired.
Applicants with a least 960 hours or 6 months of continuous EMT hours will be deemed most qualified.
SELECTION PROCESS
Only the top applicants will be invited to participate in the oral interviews.
As a result of the interview process, an eligible list of candidates will be established. Additional points will be added to the passing score of candidates who are City of Pasadena residents. Proof of residency (valid California driver's license or identification card) will be required at the time of applying and will also be verified at the time of appointment.
Applicants whose qualifications best meet the City’s needs will be invited to continue in the selection process.
Candidates not invited to oral interviews will be placed on an eligible list for one year for possible future consideration.
Qualified candidates will be invited to take the Biddle (Physical Agility Test) at the City’s expense as part of the selection process.
Special Requirements
Candidates will be required to undergo a thorough background and medical review including psychological screen and drug test.
This review includes minimum medical and vision screening requirements as per the Pre-Employment Medical Questionnaire for the position of CSW Fire Department.
Candidates must be non-smokers and remain non-smokers for the duration of employment.
EMT certificates must stay in good standing for the duration of employment.
Out-of-state candidates must apply for a State of California Driver's License when the conditional offer of employment is made.
Please note that you must be active on the FCTC Statewide Eligibility List (SEL) and with a passing score on the written examination of 70% or higher for the next 2025 Firefighter Trainee recruitment process.
