Job Description Summary: | In the heart of the nation’s capital with additional programs in Virginia, the George Washington University (GW) was created by an Act of Congress in 1821. Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Treasury and Risk Management, the Director, Treasury and Finance will support the CFO organization. The Director provides asset management and investment support to the functions reporting to the CFO and Treasurer. Managing and reporting on the MFA’s cash operations and liquidity, the incumbent is tasked with enhancing accuracy and transparency to the process. The Director will provide near and long-term financial projections that will be presented to GWU and MFA trustees and will work with the CFO, the Financial Operations leadership and other functions to develop and share the strategy and vision for support and acquisition. The role will also disposition and maintenance of the University’s assets and strategic initiatives and assist in FP&A initiatives such as the new budget model. The Director will also: - Develop and present on operational and strategic opportunities for the Trustees and University leadership.
- Track, forecast, and communicate results of performance and present reports on current and potential assets.
- Analyze potential acquisitions of real estate, investments and other assets.
- Monitor and analyze asset performance metrics to identify trends, risks and opportunities for improvement.
- Drive review analysis and recommendations on Public Private Partnership (P3) initiatives.
- Prepare and present investment presentations and acquisition models to leadership.
- Assist in creating, implementing, and monitoring acquisition strategies.
- Monitor key initiatives across higher education and evaluate opportunities.
This role will also oversee a financial analyst and be responsible for providing guidance, mentorship and support to achieve departmental objectives. Additional duties include:
- Manage the preparation of financial outlooks and forecasts
- Prepare the five-year financial forecast model
- Oversee and optimize cash and liquidity for the Medical Faculty Associates (MFA)
- Manage obtention of MFA financial reporting, perform analysis and presentation
- Proactively drive analyses of business performance and results and provide thoughtful, informed recommendations
- Develop financial models, forecasts, and scenario analyses to support strategic decision-making and resource allocation
- Prepare and deliver presentations to executive leadership, Board of Trustees and external stakeholders
- Manage credit rating agency relationships, prepare annual surveys and presentations, examine reports and build scenario planning models
- Support real estate transaction opportunities and other investments by preparing financial analyses and presentations
- Valuation of public private partnerships (P3s)

Minimum Qualifications: | Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 7 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 5 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. |
Preferred Qualifications: | - Extensive experience (ideally 7-10 years) in treasury management, financial planning & analysis, or related roles, preferably within higher education or nonprofit sector
- Strong understanding of financial principles, budgeting processes, and accounting standards applicable to universities
- Proven track record of leadership, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent analytical abilities, with proficiency in financial modeling and data analysis tools
- Effective communication skills, with the ability to present complex financial information to diverse audiences
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple priorities, and drive results collaboratively
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills: significant experience in building, maintaining and improving financial and operational models as well as one-off ad hoc analysis
- Accountability: ability to take charge of required duties and take on additional opportunities as needed for the benefit of the team and university
