The work shift hours for this opportunity are: 5:00 p.m. - 1:30 a.m. Employees working the 5:00 p.m. - 1:30 a.m. shift receive night shift differential pay.
ABOUT THE POSITION
Under general supervision, the Custodian cleans and maintains assigned areas in and around buildings; incumbents are responsible for cleaning a small building or a specified area in a large building; and performs related duties within the area of assignment.
The Custodian is the journey level classification and performs basic to routine custodian duties such as cleaning and sanitizing in their assigned location. The Custodian could report to the Lead Custodian or Supervising Custodian.
This classification is distinguished from the Lead Custodian in that the latter has lead responsibility for the work of a group of custodians.
Examples of Duties
(These functions are intended as a general illustration of the work performed in this job classification and are not all inclusive for this position)
- Assumes responsibility for services and activities of an assigned custodial function.
- Sweeps, scrubs, mops, and vacuums floors; strips, waxes, and buffs floors, using heavy, power-driven equipment.
- Empties and cleans waste receptacles, including large and/or heavy cans.
- Cleans light fixtures, replaces light bulbs and fluorescent tubes.
- Dusts and polishes woodwork, desks, shelves, and tables.
- Cleans restrooms and replenishes sanitary supplies such as toilet paper and soap.
- Washes windows, mirrors, and walls.
- Moves furniture and equipment as necessary to clean floors.
- Maintains clean and orderly work and storage areas.
- Reports to supervisor conditions which may require maintenance, such as water leaks, clogged drains, or burned-out lights.
- Reports unsafe conditions; adheres to safe work practices and procedures.
- May keep simple records related to areas cleaned and custodial supplies.
- Attends and participates in unit meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of building maintenance and safety.
- Performs related duties and responsibilities within area of assignment.

CUSTODIAN
Minimum Qualifications
Education and/or Experience:
Any combination of education, experience and training that would relate to the maintenance and sanitation of a commercial or public building. Experience in a public agency is preferred.
License Required:
Possession of a valid California Driver License, Class C or higher, by date of appointment.
Physical:
You must pass a pre-employment physical examination.

Knowledge of:
- Operational characteristics of a custodian maintenance function.
- Materials, methods, and equipment used in custodial service.
- Principles and practices of basic custodial practices.
- General cleaning and maintenance techniques.
- Safe use of cleaning chemicals and agents.
- Hazards, accident prevention, and safety practices for custodial work.
Ability to:
- Operate heavy floor care machinery, after receiving minimal instruction.
- Read signs, labels, work schedules and simple instructions in English or Spanish.
- Understand and follow oral directions in English or Spanish.
- Work cooperatively with others including judicial officers, management, coworkers, and the public representing diverse cultures and backgrounds.
- Prepare cleaning materials, including choosing proper tools and cleaning agents.
- Perform basic mathematical functions such as counting, adding, and subtracting small numbers and identifying quantities.
- Speak English sufficiently to communicate basic ideas to supervisor and other employees.
- Perform heavy, fatiguing work such as: climbing, pushing, pulling, stooping, and lifting containers of materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Pass a background check to the satisfaction of the Court.
