Job Summary
The successful applicant will serve as the Senior Engineer for the mechanical and optical needs of the telescopes, buildings, and supporting infrastructure at Palomar Observatory. The successful applicant will work in close coordination with the Palomar Observatory Site Superintendent and staff to design and implement improvements and new features at the Observatory. He or she will also be responsible for ensuring that sound engineering practices, including documentation standards are applied to Observatory upgrades and maintenance.
Essential Job Duties
Engineering oversight for telescope, building and infrastructure engineering, maintenance, and operations.
Maintain engineering “punch list” of outstanding Observatory improvement, operations, and maintenance issues.
Coordinate activities with the campus-based OIR Engineering Group and Engineering Groups of Partner Organizations on projects for Palomar Observatory.
Contributes engineering designs and project plans to address maintenance, operations, and upgrade initiatives at the Observatory.
In conjunction with the Site Superintendent, provides leadership, project and task management, and guidance to other members of the Observatory team in the execution of engineering initiatives.
Advises Director’s Office and contributes to long-term Observatory planning as a member of COO Executive Staff.
Chairs Telescope Engineering Committee and coordinates activities of this committee in making recommendations on engineering, technical, and operations issues.
In some cases, and only at the request of the observatory superintendent, the preferred candidate responds to facility emergencies where the candidate may have special cognizance.
Basic Qualifications
BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
10 years’ experience in an industrial, production, or research technical environment.
Established record providing leadership for small, focused technical teams.
Preferred Qualifications
MS Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
15 years’ experience in an industrial, production, or research technical environment.
Established record providing leadership for small, focused technical teams.
Experience working at an observatory in a technical capacity, supporting optical and infrared detectors, direct imaging, spectroscopy, and adaptive optics.
Experience supporting the development of new telescope and instrument software and hardware.
