The Inquiry Manager oversees the administration and operations of the Inquiry courses and programs which include the oversight of teaching and learning activities, program curriculum, learner scheduling, maintaining databases, tracking learner compliance, and program accreditation. Develops, prioritizes and implements strategies that improve program quality, processes, and compliance. The Manager supervises a team of five staff members to meet program and course goals, aligned with broader School of Medicine policies and procedures.
The Inquiry Curriculum teaches a “habit of mind,” and takes place across the four-year Bridges Curriculum, beginning on day one and culminating at the Inquiry Symposium. Each step of the four-year curriculum advances the learner, first to a sophisticated consumer of biomedical science, and then to a producer of new knowledge. The Inquiry Curriculum includes the following components: 1) Core Inquiry, which takes place weekly during years 1 and 2 of medical school; 2) Inquiry Immersion, which takes place in year 1 of medical school and 3) Deep Explore, which takes place in year 4 of medical school and provides a focused research project experience for students.
The Inquiry Curriculum Goals include:
• Extend student understanding of biomedical sciences to the edge of what is known and recognize the limits of current knowledge.
• Provide individualized, four-year project advising to every student, small group teaching in every course, and Designing and Conducting Research, a course in experimental design and proposal-writing, for all students.
• Offer the widest range of choice in the exploration of scientific and creative domains.
• Integrate learners from different UCSF schools and levels of training into the primary experience of all UCSF medical students.
• Enable 12-20 weeks of flexible, protected time to complete an independent mentored project.
• Simplify the grant-finding and funding process for all learners.
