Position Description Summary:

Position Description: The George Washington University (GWU) seeks to hire a scholar with broad interests in food studies from an interdisciplinary perspective, someone who conducts research and preferably has taught food innovation, policy and/or humanities, and will contribute to GWU’s transdisciplinary and policy-relevant research around the three pillars of the institute. This position will begin as early as Fall 2024.
Areas of expertise could include (but are not limited to) food and nutrition security, food waste, supply chain, agroeconomics, food science or innovation, global, national, or local food policy, sustainable/regenerative agriculture, food culture, or food justice.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will have some experience in and be expected to teach undergraduate courses in food studies, including an introductory course on food studies, a capstone course, and will be able to develop new undergraduate courses in their area of expertise. The candidate will also be expected to teach upper-division courses such as a capstone course. The courses the candidate would teach should align with the institute’s mission.
Courses envisioned with this hire include:
Global Food Institute (GFI 1001) Introduction to Food Studies (a large 100-student lecture course)
Global Food Institute (GFI 2092) Research in Food Innovation
Global Food Institute (GFI 3097) Capstone in Food Studies (an experiential learning course)
An upper-level sustainability course developed by the applicant
An upper-level research methods course developed by the applicant
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must have a PhD or other terminal degree in a field related to sustainability by date of appointment. Applicants must have teaching experience and / or must be able to demonstrate their commitment to excellence in teaching.
