Westat has an immediate opening for an Assistant Controller reporting to the Associate Vice President, Controller. You will oversee and manage day-to-day operations of the accounting department. This entails ensuring the timely and accurate completion of tax-related tasks, monthly closing procedures, financial reporting, maintenance of an adequate accounting records system, and fulfillment of other corporate accounting responsibilities as directed by the Controller or CFO. This role will have supervisory responsibilities including hiring, training, directing work, and appraising performance, and will partner with leadership to ensure the efficient and accurate operation of the accounting department. This role is hybrid eligible (3-4 days in office per week).
Job Responsibilities:
• Oversee and assist with all general accounting functions, including the general ledger and select balance sheet account reconciliations, financial close processes, cost accounting, and accounting operations ensuring accurate and efficient transaction processing and compliance with GAAP, CAS, FAR, and Westat’s policies.
• Oversee the operations of the accounting department, including optimizing controls and processes to achieve department's objectives.
• Develop recommendations with respect to automation or other opportunities to improve the effectiveness of the department and inspire adoption throughout the organization.
• Document, improve, and maintain policies and procedures working closely with the Internal Controls team.
• Support interactions with external audits and reporting to government agencies including preparation of required items.
Basic Qualifications:
• Typically requires a bachelor’s degree in accounting and/or finance, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• 15+ years of progressive and relevant accounting and supervisory experience
• Government contracting accounting experience
• Strong knowledge of GAAP, CAS and FAR
Preferred Qualifications:
• Familiarity with DCAA, DCMA, NIH, or other Federal contract agencies
• Deltek Costpoint proficiency
• Cognos reporting and/or data extraction proficiency
• Bi-lingual, Spanish preferred
