What we’re looking for:
The Senior Medical Editor is an integral member of the Medical & Scientific group, ensuring the editorial accuracy and integrity of deliverables to clients. You will support the medical and creative teams as they shepherd content from conception through production, review, revision, and final submission.
The Senior Medical Editor will primarily be responsible for providing editorial services, including copy editing, proofreading, and fact-checking, to help prepare materials for pharma and biotech clients. This role provides quality control for the agency and therefore is crucial to the successful execution of projects, ensuring that every project is accurate, free of typos and grammatical errors/inconsistencies, reads well, maintains consistent tone and formatting, and adheres to all applicable guidelines. You will liaise with all members of our cross-functional teams, supervise the work of independent contractors, and provide support to Medical Production Editors in the submission of materials into our clients’ medical/legal/regulatory (MLR) review systems. It is expected that you will be capable of consistently delivering high-quality products on time and within budget. You will review abstracts, posters, manuscripts and PowerPoint presentations at every stage of development—from outline to proofs.
You have a passion for language, communicating ideas in a clear and concise manner. You have a strong editorial point of view—you know the rules of writing and how to make a written piece stronger through editing. You will thrive in a fast-paced environment and will embrace a collaborative and team-based approach to work. You are also able to work independently. You understand science and/or are interested in medicine and science enough to read about it all day and can pivot quickly from project to project.
Responsibilities
- Edit (from substantive to line editing), fact-check, and proofread a wide range of deliverables, including slide decks, websites, abstracts, posters, video materials (scripts, storyboards, etc.), clinical case studies, mobile apps, and manuscripts
- Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams at all stages of a deliverable to facilitate resolutions to conflicts in style, content, and design
- Supervise independent editors and proofreaders effectively
- Maintain and adhere to internal and client-specific editorial style guides
- Collaborate with editorial team members in the conception, documentation, and consistent application of editorial processes to ensure efficient and streamlined systems
- Assist in the preparation and uploading of materials to client-specified MLR submissions systems as needed to ensure that materials are compliant with established client standard
Skills & Experience
- Minimum 3-5 years of professional experience in copyediting and proofreading experience in medical communications or digital publishing
- Superior skills in a range of editorial tasks, including copyediting and proofreading
- Experience adhering to specified editorial and design styles, with the ability to adapt to different styles, when necessary
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- High level of attention to detail with excellent organizational and project management skills and a proven ability to multitask and meet deadlines
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel), Adobe Acrobat, and digital devices (eg, iPad)
- Must be proactive and able to problem-solve, providing alternative solutions as changes arise during a project
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, deadline-driven, and dynamic environment, with a wide variety of professional staff
- Strong social skills, including tact, diplomacy, assertiveness, flexibility, cooperation, and respect
- Experience in medical editing, particularly at a healthcare advertising agency, medical education firm, pharmaceutical company, or healthcare-focused web/mobile app development firm
