The Akron Board of Education announces an opening for Director of Safety and Security Job Code 109, TS 522 (260 Days), Salary Range (TBD). Collective Bargaining Unit – none. This is a School Employees Retirement System position.

Qualifications:
Required:
Bachelor’s Degree in criminal justice, business, or education-related field; and/or verified completion of Police Academy; and/or minimum of 4 years Military experience
5 to 7 years of administrative experience or leadership in the area of safety in a school/district setting
Extensive knowledge of safety codes and emergency preparedness.
In-depth knowledge of the district’s mission and vision
In-depth knowledge of youth development and positive supports for preventing safety concerns
Adept at building and sustaining relationships
Demonstrated experience in working with students, staff, parents, social service agencies and community groups;
Demonstrated excellence in writing and communication
Ability to communicate effectively with administrators, staff, parents, students and community;
Current Ohio Driver’s License
Desired:
Master’s Degree in criminal justice, business, or education-related field
Strong personal and decision-making skills
Ability to work as a team to impact the mission of Akron Public Schools
Ability to identify and define problems, collect and analyze data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
Ability to read, analyze and interpret local, state and federal regulations and policies
Knowledge of professional learning communities;
Position Description:
Coordinates safety planning and practice to support academic processes of each school by implementing innovative best practices in safety, security and emergency preparedness with proper adaptation to each unique environment so the support of students and process of education can be enhanced rather than impeded by safety efforts.
Coordinates a comprehensive security/school safety program, policies and procedures by studying organization operations and schedules; establishing internal controls; conducting inspections as appropriate; and reporting potential hazards to appropriate departments
Supervises assigned safety and security staff members and coordinates their development aligned with the mission and vision of the district, particularly to enhance their skills in prevention, building relationships with diverse populations, close connections with their school neighborhood, and their role as advocates for students vs strictly a role of enforcement.
Implement a communication strategy with students, families, and community members, including regular attendance at community events, regarding the vision of school resource officers and safety team members as supports to positive youth development
Coordinates school safety compliance with federal, state and local regulations by studying existing and new requirements and ensuring appropriate adjustments in practices, as needed
Conducts and coordinates safety, security and emergency preparedness training by developing, scheduling and/or facilitating training for staff, students and public safety officials relating to school safety, security and emergency preparedness.
Creates and updates school board policies, administrative guidelines, and district safety and security manuals
Performs and promotes all activities in compliance with the district’s equity policy in order to ensure equitable educational access for all students
Evaluates effectiveness of school safety and security programs using data tools that support an equity-based analysis
Develops and monitors a reporting system designed to detect security issues in school facilities;
Ensures application of safety and security protocols to public events, sports events, and other extracurricular school district activities.
Coordinates program of conducting background checks and screenings for school district employees, including issuing ID badges for employees, vendors, visitors
Researches and recommends additions and improvements to the safety management program, particularly in areas such as emergency preparedness, accident prevention, general safety, and risk management.
Coordinates with local law enforcement and other appropriate health and safety professionals in matters of public safety involving students and staff.
Prepares and monitors departmental budget
Performs other related duties as assigned by the Superintendent
