The New Jersey Judiciary is seeking a highly motivated professional with excellent legal writing, analytical, and communication skills to work with judges, senior management, and statewide vicinage staff assigned to the Sexually Violent Predator Act caseload.
The individual will prepare legal memos, provide recommendations to the judge(s), and communicate with the judges’ staff and assist in overseeing the management of this caseload, creating and maintaining statistical reports, and performing such follow-up work as necessary.
The individual will also coordinate with various outside agencies, including but not limited to, the Office of the Attorney General, Office of the Public Defender, Department of Corrections, Department of Health, and other experts in the field on this case type. The individual will also be responsible for coordinating and moderating all court hearings. Note: Trial court practice and/or experience are desired as is familiarity with technology and technological solutions.
Note: This position may qualify for remote work outside of Judiciary buildings. To participate in this program, you will be required to have high speed home internet access. This program does not supersede the "New Jersey First Act", which requires newly hired Judiciary employees to establish, and then maintain, principal residence in the State of New Jersey.
Example of Duties
Reviewing and analyzing motions and providing the court with memoranda as required.
Investigating and responding to correspondence and inquiries from judges, staff, attorneys, agencies, experts, and other parties.
Conducting legal research and analysis on the Sexually Violent Predator Act.
Drafting, preparing, and managing legal memoranda, reports, correspondence, opinions, and other documents.
Consulting with judges, senior management, attorneys, staff, or law clerks with regard to special problems or policy issues.
Reviewing and analyzing court opinions and legislation affecting the Judiciary, specifically regarding the Sexually Violent Predator Act.
Reviewing the Sexually Violent Predator Act program, policies, and procedures for compliance with laws, court rules, or administrative directives.
Providing information to judges, senior management, court staff, attorneys, or agencies.
Preparing and updating training materials and conducting staff and new employee training on issues related to the Sexually Violent Predator Act caseload.
Performing related duties and projects, sometimes in other divisions, that shall be assigned by senior management.
Providing back-up, support, and assistance to other staff when necessary.
Qualifications
Graduation from an American Bar Association-approved law school and one (1) year of experience in legal research and analyzing and evaluating legal documents, rules, regulations, and/or legislation.
Substitution: One (1) year of experience as a Judicial Law Clerk may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
License: Attorney-at-Law with a plenary license in the State of New Jersey and having Supreme Court Good Standing Status of Active.
Supplemental Information
Driver's License: Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
Authorization to Work: US citizenship is not required. Selected candidate must be authorized to work in the US according to Department of Homeland Security, US Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations.
Special Note: Newly hired employees must agree to a thorough background check that will include fingerprinting. All data received will be kept in strict confidence except to inform the individual of the findings and what action will be taken as a result of this information.
Residency Law: In accordance with N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70), the "New Jersey First Act," all persons newly hired by the Judiciary within one year must establish, and then maintain, principal residence in the State of New Jersey. Any person may request an exemption from that requirement from the Employee Residency Review Committee in the Department of Labor & Workforce Development on the basis of either hardship or employer critical need.
