Position Overview:
Nikon Research Corporation of America (NRCA), located in Belmont, CA and Tucson, AZ is a 65-person R&D subsidiary of Nikon, Japan. Members of our Precision Mechatronics group perform research projects that lead to future products for Nikon’s precision equipment business groups. Examples of the products we work on are semiconductor lithography machines (wafer steppers), industrial metrology tools, optical measurement equipment, additive manufacturing, and precision motion systems. The engineering is challenging and fun, because with micron- and nanometer-level accuracy everything (e.g., mechanical stiffness, thermal expansion, actuator linearity, sensor accuracy, acoustic vibration, structural resonance) matters. The work environment is great because we have the informality and flexibility of a small company, but the stability and resources of a big parent in Japan.
The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for designing, assembling, debugging, and testing novel electromechanical, optomechanical, and metrology systems with micron- and nanometer-level precision for potential future products. This person will work on a small team (4-6 engineers) to develop concepts, perform engineering analysis, create CAD design and drawings, work with suppliers, build prototypes, and support system integration and testing.
Candidate must have:
- A Bachelor’s degree or above in Mechanical Engineering
- Strong background in mechanical design and engineering fundamentals, including kinematics, dynamics, material properties, structural and thermal analysis
- Proficient with 3D solid modeling tools (SolidWorks preferred)
- Basic experience with mechanical analysis using “first principles” engineering equations and FEA tools
- Excellent laboratory skills, including experiment design, instrumentation, conducting measurements
- Proficient with MATLAB programming and data-analysis
- Familiarity with GD&T, Design for Manufacturing, Design for Assembly
- Familiarity with basic machine shop tools
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team
An ideal candidate has:
- 2+ years’ experience
- Experience working in a cleanroom environment
- Experience with wafer processing
- Semiconductor equipment design
- Optics and opto-mechanics
- Electromagnetic design and analysis
- Knowledge on automation, mechatronics, and robotics
