The Santa Cruz Sentinel is seeking a dynamic Assistant Editor to join our team and help shape the future of local journalism. This is an exciting opportunity for a driven and experienced journalist to collaborate with a talented team and create a lasting impact in our community.

What you will do:

• Guide our dedicated local news team, fostering a collaborative environment that empowers journalists to excel and grow

• Work alongside the Managing Editor to develop and execute a compelling news coverage strategy that resonates with our diverse audience

• Sharpen your editing skills, ensuring our online and print stories are clear, accurate, and captivating

• Collaborate with reporters, photographers, and community members to uncover the stories that matter most

• Elevate your journalism expertise across a range of topics, from local government and politics to economic trends and cultural events

• Leverage SEO and social media to amplify our stories and engage with our ever-growing online audience

What you will bring:

• Passion for local journalism and a commitment to serving the Santa Cruz community

• Proven track record of editing for clarity, accuracy, and impact

• Strong leadership skills and the ability to inspire and motivate a team

• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, both online and offline

• Keen understanding of digital media and its role in modern journalism

• Minimum of five years of journalism experience and a Bachelor's degree in Journalism or a related field

• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation is required

The annual salary range is $66,560. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, MediaNews Group offers a comprehensive benefits package, and a 401K plan (all benefits are based on eligibility).
