The City of Riverside is accepting applications for the position of TRAFFIC SIGNAL TECHNICIAN I OR II to fill one (1) vacancy in the Traffic Engineering Division of the Public Works Department. The eligibility list established may be used to fill the current and/or upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to six (6) months.
Under general supervision, Traffic Signal Technician I is to perform skilled labor, electrical and limited electronic work in the maintenance and repair of traffic signal equipment; and to do related work as required.
Additionally, under general supervision, a Traffic Signal Technician II is to perform skilled electronic and advanced electrical work and repair of traffic signal equipment; and to do related work as required.
Traffic Signal Technician I

Work Performed
When assigned as a Traffic Signal Technician I:
Typical duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Repair or replace signal head components, controllers, relays, switches, fuses, timers and cabinet parts.
Repair signals involved in accidents, repairing minor damage or removing and replacing standards and signal heads, including rewiring.
Investigate complaints and reports of signal malfunctions; adjust, repair or remove defective equipment; make field repairs of damaged equipment.
May assist, in a learning capacity, in the repair of electronic equipment.
May assist in new traffic signal construction inspection.
Keep accurate work records; order supplies, parts and materials.
Additionally, when assigned as a Traffic Signal Technician II: Typical duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Perform quality assurance testing on new signal equipment.
Inspect signal controls and auxiliary equipment; diagnose malfunctions; adjust and replace electronic and mechanical equipment.
Inspection of traffic signals constructed under contract.
Repair, replace or modify signal head components, controllers, relays, switches, fuses, timers and cabinet parts.
Construct special test equipment for shop testing of electronic components.
Investigate complaints and reports of signal malfunctions; adjust, repair or remove defective equipment; make field repairs of damaged equipment.
Test electronic devices and components using shop equipment.
Keep accurate work records; order supplies, parts and materials.
Qualifications
Recruitment Guidelines:
For Traffic Signal Technician I: Education:High School graduation or satisfactory equivalent (GED).
Experience:One year of experience in the construction and modification of traffic signals. Specific traffic signal control system experience is desirable or two years of experience in the maintenance and repair of electrical and/or electronic equipment.
Necessary Special Requirements:
Possession of an appropriate, valid class "C" California Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
Possession of a valid class "B" CA License within 6 months from the date of appointment.
Possession of a Level I Signal Certification and Work Zone Traffic Control Certification from the International Municipal Signal Association within one (1) year from the date of appointment.
Must have normal color vision.
The position further requires that the incumbent serve on a rotating basis, mandatory on-call status, with no more than 30 minutes response time (within lawful speed limits) to the Traffic Signal Shop in response to emergency calls.
Highly Desired Qualifications: Possession of a Level I Signal Certification from the International Municipal Signal Association.
For Traffic Signal Technician II: Education: High School graduation or satisfactory equivalent (GED).
Experience: Two years of experience in the construction and modification of traffic signals. Specific traffic signal control system experience is desirable or three years of experience in the maintenance and repair of electrical and/or electronic equipment.
