Job Summary
DESCRIPTION
The Adaptive Physical Education (APE) teacher is responsible for the development of an adaptive physical education program for Special Education students who require specialized instruction in physical, coordinative, manipulative skills. The teacher in this position must utilize a range of instructional techniques and strategies to enhance student progress, establish a productive learning environment, and provide individualized and small group instruction consistent with the Individualized Education Program (IEP) of each pupil.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Utilize appropriate district and state curriculum framework guidelines, standards, policies and procedures
• Assess physical and perceptual motor needs of students in order to develop goals and objectives, and implement instructional plans for appropriate motor programs and activities
• Provide innovative, creative, and adapted physical education instruction for special education students
• Participate with the IEP team in the planning of an individualized education program for each student
• Develop appropriate instructional goals and objectives for each pupil based upon assessment and observational data
• Work closely with school personnel to complement and supplement academic concepts and consult with classroom teachers regarding physical education
• Analyze, demonstrate, and explain basic skills, techniques, and strategies of formal sports, games, rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement to students
• Provide adequate supervision of assigned students
• Regularly communicate specific, evaluative feedback to students, parents and general education teachers regarding student progress in meeting set goals and objectives
• Maintain professional competence through participation in in-service educational activities provided by the District and in other professional growth activities as needed to stay current in pedagogy and methodologies in Adaptive Physical Education

Requirements / Qualifications
Education: Possession of an earned Baccalaureate or higher degree from an accredited college or university in physical education or related field.
Certification Requirement: Possession of a valid California Single Subject: Physical Education and/or a valid California credential authorizing instruction in Adaptive Physical Education credential, must also have EL and Autism authorization.
