This position works for the City of Morgan Hill, with their office space located in-person at Gilroy City Hall at 7301 Hanna St, Gilroy, CA 95020. Commitment of 30 hours per week. Hours are flexible so long as they are completed Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Candidates may be asked to work occasional weekends and occasional weekday evenings to aid with public outreach events.
JOB SUMMARY: Under the direct supervision of the Environmental Services Administrator, coordinates, implements, and monitors the City’s environmental programs in designated program areas (stormwater pollution prevention regulatory compliance, solid waste regulatory compliance, etc.); provides professional and technical assistance to departmental staff, contractors, interns and volunteers in assigned areas of responsibility; performs related work as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS: The Environmental Programs Coordinator is a journey level class responsible to coordinate and implement environmental programs adopted by the City. Initially, work is clearly defined and performed under close review. As experience and proficiency are gained, assignments become more complex and performed with greater independence. This class is distinguished from other classes by the degree of independent thought, action and interdepartmental coordination of various environmental program efforts.

1. Implements and coordinates the City’s environmental programs to support the goals of the community and City Council.
Environmental programs are customized and designed to balance environmental leadership with programmatic costs and community acceptability.
Ongoing evaluation of environmental programs results in the ability to adjust programs to meet changing community needs.
Collaborative style fosters teamwork and encourages employee input and involvement in environmental programs.
2. Leads in ensuring the City of Morgan Hill is compliant with current environmental regulatory requirements.
Detailed reports and analyses are prepared to comply with all regulatory requirements.
Monitoring of legislation and policies of regulating agencies supports future environmental planning.
Coordination and collaboration with other organizations results in efficient regional responses to regulatory requirements.
3. Engage in coordination efforts with other departments, agencies, and the community to promote environmental programs.
Collaborations in the implementation of environmental activities result in programs that are widely integrated into City operations.
Private and nonprofit sector members of the community support environmental programs and assist in program implementation.
Community members and student interns are engaged in program implementation.
Purposeful community engagement and public education programs take advantage of new technologies and reach all aspects of the community.
4. Lead the development and exploration of new environmental initiatives.
Evaluation and pursuit of grants results in increased resources to provide environmental programs.
Verbal briefings and written reports are prepared for use by City officials and others in a clear and concise manner.
5. Performs other job-related responsibilities as evident or directed by supervisor, Director of Public Services, or the City Manager.
Qualification Requirements
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.
Education & Experience:
Possess a Bachelors degree from an accredited college in environmental science, business, public administration or a related field of study.
Experience related to environmental programs is highly desirable.
Licenses & Certificates:
Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license in compliance with adopted City driving standards.
Knowledge of:
Current methods, materials and techniques for implementation and monitoring a broad range of environmental programs.
Research methods and the sources of information pertaining to areas of responsibility.
Relationships between the City, general public and other government agencies.
Applicable City, county, state and federal laws, ordinances and regulations.
Skill in:
Developing and implementing goals, objectives and procedures.
Conducting studies, analyzing complex problems, evaluating alternatives and making sound, creative recommendations.
Maintaining accurate records and preparing clear, concise and competent reports, correspondence and other written materials.
Data processing and computer applications.
Administering and monitoring state and federal grant applications.
