Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in
order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily
perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; operating equipment used in
the installation and repair of irrigation and water conveyance systems (potable or reclaimed); and
planning and managing projects.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read a variety of manuals, write
documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and solve practical
problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions
of the job include: safety practices and procedures; back flow prevention devices; hydraulic, electrohydraulic
and micro electric controllers; and calculating and applying hydraulic mathematical
formulas.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; gather and/or collate data; and consider
a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of
circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using a
variety of processes. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with
similar types of data; and utilize a variety of types of job-related equipment. Problem solving with
data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is
significant. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of
the job include: adhering to safety practices; being attentive to detail; meeting deadlines and
schedules; and working under time constraints.

Purpose Statement:
The job of Irrigation Technician is done for the purpose/s of maintaining irrigation and water
conveyance (potable or reclaimed) systems; determining optimal irrigation schedules; ensuring
water conservation while meeting District demands; providing design assistance to District sites
relating to landscaping/turf issues and/or renovation projects; and ensuring adequate materials
are available for timely completion of job functions. Incumbents in this classification provide
students, staff and the public with well-maintained and safe grounds and facilities which directly
supports learning.
This job reports to Manager, Maintance Services.
