The City of Laguna Beach Public Works Department is seeking a motivated, results-oriented individual to fill the position of Engineering Technician. This role involves a variety of duties and responsibilities in the fields of civil engineering design, public works administration, engineering technical assistance, public works permitting and inspection, computer-aided design (CAD), and geographic information systems (GIS). The Engineering Technician will report to a division manager within the Public Works Department or as assigned by the Director. Additionally, this position may supervise interns or part-time staff as necessary.

Reviewing permit applications and associated plans for compliance and issuing public works permits.
Preparing and reviewing plans, cross-sections, profiles, diagrams, maps, exhibits, graphs, and charts using computer-aided design (CAD) or other computer applications.
Conducting field inspections.
Providing support at the public counter.
Responding to public inquiries in person, electronically, or over the telephone.
Conducting or participating in studies and field surveys in the collection and compilation of a wide variety of data.
Communicating with utility companies and outside agencies.
Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience demonstrating the ability to effectively and successfully perform the duties of the position is considered qualifying. A typical combination is as follows:
Education: A high school diploma or equivalent supplemented by college-level coursework in engineering, mathematics or a related field. A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field from an ABET accredited program is desirable.
Experience: Prior civil engineering, municipal government, and/or public works construction and inspection experience is desirable.
License/Certificate Requirements: Due to the performance of some field duties, which may require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid California Driver’s license and an acceptable driving record are required.

Application/Selection Process: Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis, with a first review on July 10, 2024. Applications will be screened carefully and selected applicants will be invited to participate in the Structured Panel Interview. The appointing hiring authority will further review the job-related qualifications of those deemed eligible for hire before making selection decisions. The selection process may be modified based on the needs of the City. Pre-Placement Process: The selected candidate must successfully pass a fingerprint check with the State Department of Justice, a pre-placement physical and drug test, educational and employment verification, and reference check(s).
