Posting Summary:

The Office of Graduate Student Life & Development (GSLD) at Teachers College (TC) is seeking a part-time Coordinator who will support community initiatives focusing on student’s sense of belonging to the College through community programming and student organization advisement. This position will serve as the main liaison with our community of students who are parents and implement initiatives, programming and resources to best support our students and their families.

Job Summary/Basic Function:

Reporting to the Associate Director of Graduate Student Life and Development, the part-time Coordinator will function as the College’s representative for the needs of students who are parents. The incumbent will focus on providing holistic and intentional programs, workshops, and resources to meet the needs of our students who are parents and their families. The Coordinator will also be responsible for working with key stakeholders across the College to advise on best practices and support for students with dependents to have their needs understood and addressed in all aspects of their TC experience. Additionally, the position’s focus will be supporting students in gaining a sense of community through student organization advisement and by providing programs & initiatives to allow students to find a balance between their academic and social identity at the College.
This position is crucial for supporting all in-person operations within the office. Responsibilities include planning and facilitating events, assisting at the front desk, and maintaining an on-campus presence to interact with students face-to-face. Typically, programs are conducted in-person, with the option to use Zoom for hybrid participation. Staff are expected to work during the hours of 9am-5pm to support the office’s standard hours of operation for students, however staff may be required to work evenings and weekends as necessary. Staff can work remotely on designated days each week, as determined semesterly by the department leader, unless required to attend an in-person event or meeting. Please note the role requires working primarily in an office setting with frequent staff contact and interruptions. Additionally, travel via various modes of transportation may be expected for event facilitation.

The Coordinator is a one year appointment with a July 8, 2024 start date. This position is reappointment eligible. This position is a part-time position that will work 20 hours a week at $30 an hour.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Student & Family Engagement (35%)

• Facilitate summer transition workshops for newly admitted students who are parents to prepare for their move to NYC and the shift in day-to-day responsibilities
• Provide targeted programming to meet the needs of students who are parents and their children
• Advocate with campus partners on best practices regarding childcare, education placements, healthcare, and on- and off-campus housing
• Create and send monthly newsletter to highlight upcoming TC offerings, as well as free/low-cost NYC family activities
• Develop social media and digital campaigns to highlight achievements and initiatives of students who are parents
• Maintain and regularly update the Student-Parent Resources webpage providing updated information about on-campus support, off-campus resources, transitioning to NYC (education, healthcare options), policies, etc.

Student Organization Advising (25%)

• Directly advise and support student organization, Student-Parent Group, by providing support with budget management, event execution, leadership development, annual transitions, institutional requirements and policies, intergroup dynamics, etc.

Community Programming (25%)

• Plan TC Family Day, an annual event where students who are parents get the chance to bring their kids to campus and experience what it’s like to be a TC student
• Provide a series of on-campus, off-campus, and digital programming to allow students to connect with peers outside of the classroom

General GSLD Duties (10%)

• Assist Associate Director with student programming such as New Student Orientation, Graduate Student Appreciation Week, the Provost’s Student Excellence Awards and other programming initiatives
• Support with office and College-wide events and programs
• Serve as campus representative knowledgeable of resources and services available to students through Teachers College and Columbia University
• Represent GSLD on campus-wide committees and meetings as assigned by the Associate Director
• Work with staff in fostering student engagement in the learning process through intentional programs and provide a high level of student contact

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree with 2-3 years of related experience working with parents, families, or students with specified needs
• Strong computer skills (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google, Canva) as well as the ability to use web-based technology
• Proven ability to create working environments that encourage team-building, innovation and open communication; and exhibit excellent judgment as advisor, supervisor, and mentor
• Experience with providing exemplary customer service
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while being detail-orientation and self-motivated
• Diligent attention to detail and meticulous record-keeping
• Strong analytical and organizational skills
• Demonstrated success in event management with the ability to work evenings and weekends when needed
• Demonstrated ability to design, understand, commit, and participate in programs designed to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion
• Ability to work effectively to create a culture of collegial relationships with all constituents, including students/alumni, faculty and administration
• Sound professional judgment and a strong sense of ethics
• Ability to travel to other locations using various modes of private and commercial transportation
• Excellent verbal and electronic communication skills
• Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a standard office setting.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in Higher Education, Social Work, Counseling, or a related field with at least 2-3 years of progressive forward-thinking responsible experience working with parent and family needs
• Previous experience working with diverse student populations
• Knowledge of local, regional and national trends as they relate to graduate students with children
• Participation in NASPA, ACPA or a related Student Affairs or Student Development professional association
• Knowledge of best practices and competency levels expected for Student Affairs practitioners

Salary Range:

$30 per hour
