The division’s Impact Story Lab builds on National Geographic’s legacy as a global leader in using storytelling to drive positive change. We produce world-class film, audio, photography, VR/AR experiences, and other media that further the goals of NGS programs. By combining creative excellence with groundbreaking research, we advance the field of “impact media” and contribute to National Geographic Society’s mission of illuminating and protecting the wonder of our world.
The Impact Story Lab, Base Camp Associate Producer plays a key role on a creative team that develops and produces a diverse portfolio of media to support National Geographic Society’s Base Camp Construction project. Reporting to the Sr. Producer, the primary responsibility of the Associate Producer is to coordinate productions, organize deliverables, and verify rights to all media used. As time and ability allows, the Associate Producer also assists the production team in all aspects of technical and creative production.
The Associate Producer may be required to travel up to 20% (domestically and internationally).
Your Impact
Responsibilities Include
- Story and Asset Research: Conducts research on assigned story ideas, creating summaries to be used in project development. Research stock footage and photos, working closely with the Producers and Editors to determine needs. Provides footage with appropriate rights clearances for the video project’s use, working with the Legal department to check and track footage rights throughout the editing process. (30%)
- Deliverables and Legal Documentation: Organizes all project deliverables, including final cuts, raw assets, and legal documentation. Collects and files all legal documents with an emphasis on stock footage, music, appearance releases and location permits. Completes the ‘Legal Binder' for each project and archives all project assets. (30%)
- Production Coordination: Under the supervision of the Director, Sr. Producers and Producers, coordinates the pre-production, field shoots, and post production phases of a media project. During pre-production, secures location permits, coordinates logistics, and makes travel arrangements. In the field, obtains appearance releases, manages all media, and assists with care of gear. During post-production, logs and organizes all media assets, manages the feedback process, and oversees the schedule. (20%)
- Creative and Technical Production: As needed and as skills allow, the AP performs hands-on production tasks such as photography, videography, audio recording, editing, graphics, music composition, and other creative functions. (20%)
What You’ll Bring
Educational Background
Bachelor’s degree with coursework in media production preferred, or in subjects aligned with National Geographic’s mission.
Minimum Years and Type of Experience
3+ years of media production experience
Necessary Knowledge and Skills
An understanding of the processes and workflows of media production
Basic skills in writing, producing, shooting and editing
Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite software
Must be organized, able to prioritize tasks, and have a strong attention to detail
Demonstrated initiative and a willingness to learn
Able to work well both independently and as a part of a team
Excellent written, verbal, communication, collaboration and interpersonal skills
Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, & Google Workspace software

National Geographic Society offers a competitive and holistic total rewards package. Our compensation structure and transparent pay philosophy are based on industry-specific market data for similar sized nonprofit organizations.
The salary range for this position is $57,900 - 64,000.

Resident - Our Resident category recognizes that certain staff need to be physically present at Base Camp to do their work. Some Resident staff must be at Base Camp every day to do their jobs, while others may only need to be physically present onsite some of the time to meet looming deadlines or to get work done and may require a unique schedule. As such, this category has been revised to provide maximum flexibility depending on what’s required for each individual role. The days Resident staff come into the office will be determined by their teams and workflow, and they should work with their supervisors to determine their specific schedule. And throughout the year, their schedule may be adjusted based on cyclical work cycles, deadlines, and/or ebbs and flows of work.
