WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR: We're seeking an Associate General Counsel with a whatever-it-takes approach to join our team! In this full-time role, you'll be responsible for and involved in a wide range of legal and corporate matters.
WHAT WE EXPECT FROM YOU:
Advising and providing guidance on compliance matters specific to the real estate industry, such as Fair Housing Act matters, landlord/tenant matters, and local regulatory compliance matters.
Advising and providing guidance on legal matters affecting operation of a large company, such as employment matters, corporate governance matters, and investor relation maters.
Developing policies and procedures designed to enhance compliance and support the company's business and strategic objectives, and ensuring such policies and procedures are followed.
Appearing in court in Maryland and Virginia on behalf of Southern Management and its affiliates, including for landlord/tenant matters.
Assisting in the coordination of outside litigation counsel and determining litigation strategy.
Negotiating and drafting various contractual agreements, such as commercial leases and vendor contracts.
Keeping informed of industry-specific regulations and ensuring that appropriate risk management strategies are in place.
Assume responsibility for special projects assigned from time to time by the General Counsel.
Perform other duties as assigned by Manager.
Contribute to team/company engagement efforts.
Comply with all Southern Management's policies and procedures.
JOB KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
Demonstrated ability/interest in becoming a corporate generalist.
Team player with a high level of professionalism and commitment to developing strong relationships with colleagues, internal clients, and business teams across the company.
Ability to work under pressure, juggle multiple projects with competing priorities, meet deadlines, and adapt to change.
Experience with, and enthusiasm for, process improvement, and problem solving.
Superior interpersonal and written and oral communication skills
Proven organizational, analytical, and negotiation skills with exceptional attention to detail.
5+ years relevant experience in an in-house or law firm environment.
Real estate industry experience preferred.
Local government affairs experience a plus.
Membership in or eligibility for admission to the Maryland Bar and/or Virginia Bar (including Corporate Counsel admission).
