Under general supervision from the Perioperative Systems Business Manager, Director of Perioperative Services, and Executive Director of Perioperative Services, this position is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of daily charges for time, room, supplies and implants, and confirms all interfaces are working successfully so that patient billing is completed. This person coordinates the development and update of the electronic medical record (EMR) and related clinical and business systems. This position is responsible for managing the perioperative procedure dictionary and supports the development and update of all preference cards. This person works collaboratively with Supply Chain, Chargemaster Coordinator and Finance to ensure data integrity of the perioperative documentation.On a monthly basis this position will provide statistical data to finance and will provide ad-hoc reports to various departments as requested. They will work collaboratively with Perioperative Leadership, Perioperative Staff, the Clinical Informatics team, and personnel from other departments to complete coordinated projects. This position is responsible for the planning, testing, training, adoption, use, and ongoing evolution of the EMR and business systems at Torrance Memorial Medical Center. The Perioperative Clinical Informatics Coordinator serves as a liaison between practicing clinicians and Information Technology (IT) staff to improve the EMR and related clinical and business systems. The Perioperative Clinical Informatics Coordinator strives to further their understanding of both clinical and technical operational processes and incorporates this knowledge to execute best practices in both the clinical and IT disciplines.
Core Competencies
Provides comprehensive perioperative support of the perioperative EMR and other clinical information systems to ensure integrity of all associated databases, required updates and follow up to ensure ongoing functionality.
Provides end-user support to clinicians to ensure appropriate use and functionality of clinical information systems including, but not limited to Cerner and Lawson applications.
Participates in the development and integration of clinical systems in relationship to perioperative documentation processes and tools
Develops, evaluates and revises, in conjunction with hospital administration, clinical experts, IT and clinical Informatics workgroups, clinical documentation processes and tools/reports to support operational improvement processes, accuracy of perioperative documentation for compliance with regulatory bodies, and timely, appropriate billing processes to support revenue cycle.
Partners with organizational leadership to monitor and audit clinical documentation for compliance with regulatory standards and to support revenue cycle initiatives. Works with appropriate perioperative leadership to identify and develop countermeasures to support clinician compliance.
Reconciles system functionality daily to ensure all revenue cycle processes were executed, triages and identifies system interface issues, escalates and involves appropriate leadership and department personnel on problem resolution in a timely manner.
Ensures that clinical documentation system updates or changes that affect nursing workflow and essential business functions is communicated with appropriate leadership and staff in a timely manner. Initiates follow up to ensure all changes are compliant and sustained.
Provides support to all departments within perioperative services to evaluate and identify problem areas in regard to clinical documentation and business processes. Routinely works with the clinical informatics team to ensure coordinated efforts are accomplished.
Maintains a working knowledge of applicable federal, state, local, and private laws and regulation in relationship to protected health information of clinical documentation and electronic medical records.
Utilizes appropriate and effective communication and problem solving skills in all interpersonal interactions.
Provides monthly statistical reports to support organizational business operations to multiple end users including but not limited to Finance, Supply Chain, Infection Prevention and Perioperative Leadership. Provides ad-hoc reports to support unit level or other organizational process decisions relative to staffing, supply costs and documentation audits. Analyzes results and supports problem resolution and countermeasures to support organizational goals.
Maintains the integrity of the Perioperative Procedure dictionary and supports the development, standardization and maintenance of Preference Cards.
Works closely and collaboratively with Supply Chain, Revenue Cycle and the Chargemaster Coordinator to ensure all additions and updates to Lawson, the Organization Charge Master and Cerner are completed in a timely manner to support Revenue Cycle billing requirements.
