Position Overview:
Provides support to various lab sections through performance of accurately obtaining blood samples via venipuncture and capillary collection with regard to collection policies and procedures and concern for the patient’s emotional status. Performs clerical duties, computer system tasks, supply maintenance, and other duties as required. Performs phlebotomy for hospital inpatients, outpatients, and offsite facilities. Follows established infection control practices and adhering to established standards and practices for quality assurance.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience: One year of related experience preferred.
Other Credentials:
Knowledge and Skills: Strong interpersonal, customer service, and communication skills.
Special Training: Training in Phlebotomy including practical as well as classroom training. Basic computer skills
Mental, Behavioral and Emotional Abilities: Ability to perform venipuncture, capillary blood collection and some specimen processing functions.
Usual Workday:8 Hours
- Utilizes technical skills and abilities to perform accurate venipuncture and capillary blood collection, as well as accurately handle and process specimens.
- Adheres to and follow all laboratory procedures and practices for venipuncture, specimen collection and handling. Properly identifies patient, labels and records all test tubes accurately.
- Corrects identification and utilization of proper tubes, containers, transport media, and proper storage requirements for specimens and collection tubes.
- Understands collection requirements for special or referral testing, prepares specimens, ensures integrity and correctness of samples, and arranges for dispatch of specimens.
- Corrects identification and correct priority for collection process.
- Performs thoroughly all clerical duties as needed, including but not limited to patient reception, report mailing.
- Performs supply inventory with emphasis on expiration dates and advises the supervisor of supply/equipment needs.
- Performs appropriate computer system application techniques to input and retrieve patient information, query test results, print reports, input orders.
- Assists in phlebotomy training of other employees and students as needed.
- Responds to STAT orders immediately.
- Observes emotional and physical state of patient for any adverse reactions to phlebotomy.
- Practices proper infection control techniques and appropriate. Keeps test tray and working area in a sanitary condition.
- Performs other duties as required.
