Job Description Summary
The student will complete two general tasks: the cleaning of oral history transcripts, and the collection of historical newspaper articles. The student will work independently and remotely, designing and tracking their own hours. Dr. Yan-Gonzalez will meet with the student once a week (typically on zoom, and in person at least once a month) to check in on their progress, answer questions, and discuss their findings.

I have used a transcription software to create preliminary transcripts of oral histories with prominent Japanese American Republicans conducted by the JARP, but the transcripts are not perfect. They need to be cleaned up by doing the following: (1) formatting the text, (2) correcting who is speaking when, (3) correcting words and names where necessary, (4) rearranging paragraph breaks as necessary. Estimated time required: 15 hours
Collect writings by Saburo Kido. Saburo Kido was the national president of the Japanese American Citizens League during World War II; after the war, he was a litigant in several landmark civil rights cases on behalf of Japanese Americans. He was also a regular columnist in several Japanese American newspapers, and a leading Republican in the community. The student will collect all of the articles that he wrote. Estimated time required: 15 hours
Collect newspaper articles about voting from incarceration camps. Although Japanese Americans were incarcerated during World War II, camp administrators viewed it as an opportunity to help incarcerees learn and practice democracy. So, Japanese Americans were encouraged to vote, even though many of their home districts that they’d been forced to leave would challenge their right to do so. The student will do a systematic search of articles from two incarceration camps (Topaz, UT and Manzanar, CA) to learn about how incarcerees understood absentee voting, gathered election information, and cast their ballots. Estimated time required: 25 hours
Required Qualifications
Currently enrolled in a program to obtain a bachelor’s degree in social science or humanities.
Sufficient knowledge of social science research methods.
Solid organizational skills and the ability to work accurately with a large amount of data.
