Overview
Responsibilities
Assists Shores zookeepers & aquarists in general upkeep of zookeeper/aquarist work areas, public areas, animal exhibits, and zoo grounds (e.g. cleans glass/acrylic; picks up litter; sweeps & mops floors, cleans walkways, windows; performs horticultural work such as grass mowing, leaf blowing/raking, weeding; cleans exhibit pools removes bedding/manure, disinfects & hoses animal enclosures).
May prepare animal diets.
May perform water quality testing and aquarium maintenance.
Operates motorized equipment (e.g. mowers, weed whips, small power tools, leaf blowers).
Observes and maintains accurate records for the region and makes recommendations to Shores head zookeeper (e.g. repairs/maintenance needed in public areas, cleaning supplies needed).
Utilizes chemical supply products and follows standardized usage guidelines and safety information as set by the Material Data Sheets.
Maintains friendly, positive attitude towards guests and follows Make It Great guest service guidelines.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Must be at least 18 years old.
High school diploma or equivalent required.
B.S. in zoology or related field preferred.
New-hire TB test required.
Valid driver’s license with good driving record required.
Able to perform heavy physical work for extended periods of time.
Able to balance multiple assignments successfully.
Able to work in varied weather conditions (i.e. extreme heat, cold, snow or rain).
Able to work in humid and/or dusty environments.
Able to work with a variety of cleaning chemicals.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Able to maintain courteous and helpful behavior.
Able to work in a team and/or individually with minimum supervision.
Able to maintain appropriate employee appearance (see uniform guidelines in the employee handbook).
Able to work flexible schedule including weekends, evenings and holidays.
