Los Angeles Harbor College (LAHC) is a two-year community college that serves a diverse population of over 10,529 students from various socio-economic backgrounds. As one of nine institutions in the LACCD, LAHC caters to the communities of Wilmington, Torrance, San Pedro, Carson, and Palos Verdes. In recent years, the college has expanded its enrollment base to include the communities throughout the greater Wilmington area. POSITION DESCRIPTION

LAHC is accepting applications from qualified individuals for a full-time Instructor Special Assignment (ISA) position to serve as the Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) Program Director. We are looking for candidates who have the desire and ability to create a welcoming culture that positively engages and impacts our diverse science, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) student population and to coordinate and provide leadership for the successful implementation of the MESA program. The MESA director is responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing activities for our STEM students. The Director will recruit, train and supervise workshop facilitators; coordinate academic excellence workshops with faculty, and professional development for students, and act as a liaison for the College with other universities, business and industry.

Interested individuals who possess the required training and experience are invited to submit a letter of interest and resume. This position is supervised by the V.P. Economic of Workforce Development. This is a limited, SFP (specially funded program) position and is a 1.00 FTE assignment. The grant is expected to last till June 30, 2027.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Minimum qualification in one of the instructional disciplines offered at LAHC
• Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic background, and disabilities of community college students.

Eligibility Requirement: COVID 19 VACCINATION

Pursuant to the LACCD Board of Trustee's Policy 2900, all students and employees must be fully vaccinated or have an approved exemption. LACCD employees are required to provide their vaccination status in compliance with the LACCD Board of Trustees policy. Newly hired employees will be required to provide their vaccination status prior to starting a position or, at the latest, by their position start date.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Recruit eligible students for the MESA program.
2. Plan, develop and facilitate academic and career advice to MESA students via workshops or other activities.
3. Establish and maintain relationships with instructional programs, high schools, colleges, and universities directly related to the MESA program.
4. Maintain contact with MESA students through personal discussions, regular meetings and other activities in order to ensure academic success.
5. Meet regularly with the Vice President and/or Dean to plan implementation of the MESA program based on the program guideline.
6. Prepare, oversee, and monitor program budget to ensure compliance with guidelines and regulations.
7. Collect, compile, and prepare data for developing reports.
8. Provide academic and support services to all underserved and underrepresented students majoring in calculus based STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields who seek to transfer to a four-year institution.
9. Maintain currency with MESA statewide initiatives and related professional societies, businesses, and industry.
10. Facilitate student participation in regional and national conferences.

12. Plan and implement tutoring and study programs for MESA students, recruit and train tutors.
13. Develop and coordinate activities related to academic and career advising, student retention, and pipeline pathway.
14. Work with local businesses and industry to provide opportunities such as internships, job shadowing, field trips, and exposure to the industry environment.
15. Oversee grant activities and prepare periodic reports for the CCCCO.
16. Maintain program records, student files, and compliance with grant requirements.
17. Train, lead, and provide work direction for program personnel. Collaborate with academic supervisor to participate in the selection and hiring of personnel and provide input for evaluation of program personnel according to established policies and procedures.
18. Develop internal operational guidelines and communicate District policy and administrative decisions to assigned personnel and students.
19. Maintain regular contact with the MESA Monitor, complete reports, evaluations and any other request by the due date.
20. Attend orientation, training and meetings for MESA Program Directors.
21. Recruit and schedule speakers for meetings of MESA students.
22. Submit written and/or oral reports on the program's status and progress to the responsible administrator.

Desired Qualifications

• Prior experience recruiting diverse STEM majors.
• One year of experience delivering to students’ academic services aimed at improving student success for students majoring in the STEM fields;
• Experience in a leadership or coordination role for an academic support program.
• Demonstrate excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
• Proficiency in both English and Spanish.
• Managing and/or implementing U.S. Department of Education Grants; participating in grant development and implementation.
• Background and experience working within Hispanic serving initiatives, programs, and activities.
• Prior experience that demonstrates commitment to supporting and championing inclusion, diversity, equity, and antiracism in a community college setting.
• Experience in Canvas, or equivalent operation systems.
• Two (2) years in education, industry or other profession involving work with postsecondary students in STEM-based fields.
• Collaborate with STEM faculty to build a community that is safe and welcoming for student success.
• Experience overseeing internships and helping students create presentations.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

This is a 12-month, D-basis, 1.0 FTE limited, faculty ISA position. This position is renewable annually based on the evaluation of outcomes and performance and availability of funds. The salary range is $87,588 to $ 162,744 is commensurate with academic preparation and experience for new employees. The doctoral differential is $5.532 per academic year.
