FOUNTAIN VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT
CLASS TITLE: HEALTH ASSISTANT
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist the school nurse in providing health services to students; explain policies to parents; administer medication to students; review health cards; communicate with the school nurse concerning health issues; track immunizations and waivers; prepare screening lists; record screening results; perform a variety of supportive duties related to providing health services to students.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Assist nurse in providing health services to students. E
Assist in the preparation of health materials for screenings. E
Address health issues with students and parents by answering questions and/or
providing literature. E
Administer oral and other medications according to doctor's prescription. E
Track immunization waivers; send notices to parents of immunizations due and
follow-up when necessary. E
Review health cards for health problems and inform school nurse when necessary. E
Check doctor and parent forms for accuracy. E
Set up medical log. E
Monitor amount of student medication on hand and notify parent prior to expiration of medication. E
Properly dispose of expired medications at the end of the school year.
Receive health concern requests from staff or parents and refer to school nurse.
Perform routine first aid including emergency treatment of children until school nurse
can be notified. E
Inspect for communicable diseases and/or parasites; complete proper records and make notifications as necessary. E
Provide support to instructional personnel by setting up displays and health exhibits; assist in the operation of audio-visual and educational health training equipment.
Maintain the confidentiality of student records and information according to established guidelines. E

Assure the health and safety of students and self by following health and safety practices and procedures.
Participate in staff meetings, in-service training programs and parent conferences as assigned.
Operate a variety of audio-visual equipment and office equipment including typewriter, copier and computer terminal.
Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Health care principles and practices related to children, including CPR and first aid.
Student health care problems and concerns.
Basic record keeping techniques.
Oral and written communication skills.
ABILITY TO:
Assist the school nurse with all health related activities.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
Work confidentially with discretion.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Understand and work within scope of authority.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school (preferably supplemented by coursework in the health care field). Experience working in the health care field and working with children is highly desirable.

• Job-related experience is required.
