East Stroudsburg University is hiring a Police Supervisor (Sgt)! Located in the beautiful Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania, ESU’s proximity to New York City and Philadelphia provides convenient access to internships, careers and social activities. Just minutes from campus are the country’s largest water parks, scenic Delaware Water Gap Recreation Area, Appalachian Trail, and other opportunities for recreational fun.
As the Police Supervisor (Sgt), you must think creatively and be comfortable executing daily operations to ensure the safety and security of all members in the campus community. You will be an active member of the University Police team and will work closely with the Chief of Police to oversee all subordinates certifying that all laws, rules, and regulations of both the University and Commonwealth are enforced. You will thrive in this role if you like combining your specialized police experience and supervisory skills all while innovating university security protocols/safety programs for the utmost protection of the campus community. To be successful in this role, you must have strong leadership, outstanding communication and excellent interpersonal skills.
Your normal shift will be Second Shift 4:00 pm to 12:00 am with days off on a 5-week rotation schedule. Your training work schedule will cover all 3 shifts, once training is successfully completed, you will move to second shift. When our team shows up for work, they are energized and motivated to succeed - all while being the most crucial piece to keeping the ESU operations humming.
What Will I Do At ESU? (AKA Essential Duties)
- Direct, supervise, train, and counselsubordinates on assigned shifts.
- Patrol University grounds and buildings onfoot or motor vehicle.
- Cooperate with other police jurisdictions asneeds arise. Appear in court and legalproceedings as
- Commonwealth prosecutor or witness.
- Enforce department procedures, Universityrules, regulations, and Commonwealth laws and arrest offenders if appropriate.
- Serve as the initial on-scene commander forall emergencies and incidents on campus.
- Coordinate necessary emergency activitieswith external agencies and internal departments that are required during anassigned shift.
- Provide formal and informal evaluation ofthe performance of officers assigned to the shift being supervised consultingwith the Chief of Police and Captain as appropriate.
- Supervise crowd and traffic controls as theneed arises. Issue citations or warnings for observed Vehicle Code Violations.
- Review reports and criminal complaints for thoroughnessand accuracy as completed by officers on assigned shifts.
- Recommend innovations for progressive policesecurity and safety programs on campus.
- Performs related work as required.
What We're Looking For (AKA Qualifications)
- High School Diploma or GED Equivalency; bachelor’s in criminal justice or related field preferred.
- Be 18 years or older and a citizen of the United States.
- MPOETC certification or active commissioned police officer status. One year as a Police Specialist or two years of police work including one year at a supervisory level or one year of advanced technical police work AND formal training in the provision of basic police services as certified through Act 120 Training, OR any equivalent experience or training.
- A minimum of 2 years supervising other officers is preferred.
- Maintain a current firearms qualification.
- Knowledge of commonwealth laws, rules, and regulations governing motor vehicle operation and personal conduct for employees or visitors at commonwealth facilities.
- Hands-on experience in practicing emergency first-aid, Narcan, and CPR techniques; certification preferred.
- Ability to enforce laws firmly, tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others.
- Able to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations and to determine proper courses of action.
- Specialized police experience/training such as crowd control, sexual assault investigation, crime prevention, and instructor development is helpful.
- Knowledge of or experience in community policing is helpful.
- Possession and Maintenance of a valid motor vehicle operator's license with the ability to operate state vehicles.
- Able to read, write, and comprehend English; able to follow verbal instructions.
- Experience with Word, Excel, Teams required.
