Job Abstract

The New Castle Generating Station, situated on a 270-acre site along the Beaver River, has undergone a significant transformation from a coal plant to a natural gas facility in 2016, breathing new life into its operations and contributing to the region's energy landscape. Equipped with three natural gas-fired steam boilers, the plant boasts a total potential MW output of 328. The plant is notable for its utilization of B&W Boilers and Westinghouse Steam Turbine Generators, controlled by an ABB DCS system.

Opportunity Summary

Under directive supervision, assists employees of higher classifications in the maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment and operation of the power plant. An employee under directive supervision safely troubleshoots, maintains, repairs mechanical and deenergized electrical equipment and operates plant equipment requiring an intermediate degree of skill.

Primary Duties

• Operates and performs operational maintenance on various plant equipment within environmental guidelines to assure compliance with environmental limits. Takes prompt and appropriate action to correct any deficiencies.
• Reports and documents abnormal conditions that develop during the course of work. Maintains pertinent information and standard documentation regarding existing plant and yard equipment conditions. Diagnoses root cause of operational problems, equipment failures, and forced outages. Anticipates and prevents emergency conditions. While preventing personal injury, damage to equipment, or forced outages, promptly takes action with minimal direction to restore service to normal operation in accordance with established instructions and procedures. Makes recommendations on how to eliminate the root cause of equipment operational problems.
• Tags out and clears steam/water lines and equipment.
• Inspects, dismantles, overhauls, repairs, maintains, and assembles plant equipment.
• Inspects, dismantles, overhauls, replaces parts, and assembles motors. Cleans and paints windings. Removes, reinsulates, replaces, reties, and rewedges coils. Undercuts commutators. Gauges, meggers, and performs insulation resistance tests.
• Assists with static and dynamic balancing of equipment. Assists with vibration and oil analysis by operating diagnostic tools and reporting this information as requested or collecting oil samples as directed. Replaces bearings not requiring hand fitting. Performs laser alignment on all rotating equipment. Operates oil filter apparatus.
• Performs general bench work to support inspections and overhauls.
• Operates small cranes, mobile cranes, and turbine room cranes.
• Aligns and assembles pipe and pipe fittings on intermediate energy steam, water, and air systems, pressure, and intermediate gas or oil piping systems. Repairs, packs, and maintains valves.
• Installs, replaces, and repairs heat insulation on piping, heaters, tanks, and other equipment. Removes asbestos-bearing material in accordance with accepted policies and regulations.
• Forms, shapes, and tempers tools, fixtures, and jigs. Makes necessary sketches and drawings.
• Performs general maintenance, repair, and carpentry work.
• Assists the Power Plant Operator and Senior Power Plant Operator when placing all boiler and turbine auxiliary equipment in service and/or removing it from service. Performs periodic inspections of this equipment.
• Performs minor rigging and builds scaffolding. Works on plant teams with other classifications. Provides training for assigned employees. Works on an individual level to identify the root cause of equipment failures and forced outages and makes recommendations to correct problems with standard practices and procedures.
• Relieves Power Plant Operators for short periods of time.
• Diagnoses, locates, and repairs electrical difficulties. Performs wiring on de-energized circuits.
• Troubleshoots power plant equipment.
• Performs other work as assigned.

Working Relationships

The Power Attendant reports to the Operations Manager and responds to directions from the Operations Manager, and Plant Manager.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.

Work Schedule

Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.

Compensation

Initial starting compensation is $34.14 per hour.

Job Qualifications

• Must meet the Company’s requirements as to General Qualifications.
• Must complete the Power Plant Attendant job demonstrations within an acceptable timeframe from entering the position and receiving the job demonstration packets.
• Working knowledge of plant and yard equipment layout, mechanical and electrical equipment and their functions, various circuits, control air systems, and moderately complex test apparatus is required.
• Must have a working understanding of the functions and operation of the turbine, boiler and its auxiliaries, and their relation to the operation of the plant.
• A working knowledge of the principles of operation and proper application of firefighting equipment installed on the property, as well as first aid and resuscitation practices prescribed by the Company, is necessary.
• Must possess working knowledge of mechanical maintenance, AC and DC electricity, and circuits, including the location and function of electrical and mechanical equipment, as well as repair and maintenance procedures and practices.
• Working proficiency with moderately complex equipment drawings, electrical prints, schematics, and specifications is essential. Additionally, the ability to work on a computer, prepare accurate sketches, drawings, and reports is required.
• Knowledgeable in the use and application of protective apparatus for working near energized conductors or equipment.
• Must have working knowledge of gas welding, cutting, and bending processes, as well as oxy-acetylene applications applicable to various metals.
• Must be skilled in the use of hand and portable power tools, rigging, and scaffolding required within the scope of work.
• Must be capable of performing root cause analysis on plant systems and components in order to diagnoses and eliminate failure mechanisms.
• Must possess good communication skills, the ability to work with others, and effective leadership in dealing with other employees and plant problems.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Drivers License at all times.
