The University of Virginia School of Data Science (SDS) is seeking an experienced and capable professional to serve as the Director of Information Technology and Strategy (DITS). This role extends beyond traditional IT responsibilities, requiring a strategic thinker and proven implementer to join a rapidly expanding, data-driven enterprise. The DITS will support education, research, and community initiatives aimed at advancing data science for the public good, managing these efforts through a small, dedicated team.
The DITS will report to the Dean of SDS and be a member of the senior leadership team. The DITS will work with a small advisory committee of key faculty, staff and student representatives to formulate and implement a strategic vision for the teaching, research, and business operations of the school. They will drive implementation of a data-driven infrastructures that not only support the first school of data science in the nation, but in a way that exemplifies the use of our own data. Responsibilities include:
Lead strategy and operational direction for IT resources to serve the needs of the Dean, school leadership, faculty, staff, and student populations. Hence:
Develop, manage, and mentor a small team to satisfy the desktop and web needs of SDS.
Partner with administrative leadership to support the business operations of the school, thereby maximizing the value of our data and processes.
Refine current SDS IT policies and processes and develop new ones to create efficiencies and align with school and University strategic vision.
Oversee and administer the SDS IT budget to ensure the best financial stewardship of SDS resources, approve expenditures, and ensure adherence to proper accounting practices.
Provide guidance and recommendations on resource allocation and coordination for technology and tools across the school.
Utilize business intelligence strategies to review, evaluate and recommend IT projects based upon feasibility assessments, cost/benefit calculations, risk factors or situations.
Manage the complete lifecycle of enterprise data and analytics projects, including planning, design, infrastructure, implementation, release management, maintenance, support, and stabilization.
Identify and advocate for new technology to advance the capacity for mission-focused data analytics across the school.
Create and advise on the design of data models, visualizations, analytics, and business intelligence strategies necessary to meet the school’s wide range of reporting needs.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree Required. Equivalent combination of experience, education and/or certifications may be substituted in lieu of degree.
Ten years of related experience is required with at least five years of IT or Business Intelligence management.
Substantive experience working with large, complex, and diverse data sets from multiple sources and in multiple formats.
A proven track-record of delivering reporting solutions that meet the needs of a variety of stakeholders.
Outstanding project management experience, including the demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent projects to completion and produce exceptional results.
Ability to work in a highly collaborative, matrixed environment, exercising influence and achieving results.
Ability build relationships of trust with diverse stakeholders (including senior leadership, faculty and staff, and IT team members) and work effectively with them.
Strong skills working with spreadsheets, presentation software, and visual analytics tools.
Preferred Qualifications:
Anticipated salary range: $145,000 -$155,000
