Under the general supervision of the technologist in charge, prepares tissue specimens by treating with chemicals, embeds sections and stains slides from clinical and research according to standardized department lab procedures for an optimal microscopic examination and analysis. Monitors and maintains related equipment and supplies; and other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Completion of a CAHEA-accredited histotechnology program; with an Associate’s degree plus one year of full time experience in histopathology within the last three years under the supervision of a pathologist or 3 years of recent histology laboratory experience
- ASCP certification as a histologic technician or eligible for certification
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Performs specimen collection, accessioning and logging routines:
a. Checks each specimen for criteria for acceptability, assuring proper patient identification, specimen integrity, and appropriate paperwork.
b. Records the receipt of specimens in the log and assigns identification number according to department protocol.
c. Refers any problem specimen to the area of collection and informs the supervisor for follow-up action where necessary.
2. Performs tissue grossing of dermatopathology specimens.
a. Maintains and assures specimen identification by correctly labeling cassettes, and maintains workflow in concert with the pathologist.
b. Cleans the workstation at the completion of grossing procedures. Ensures aseptic techniques and observes health safety protocols during the cleanup procedure to minimize risks to self and co-workers.
3. Processes, embeds, and sections tissues for slides:
a. Sets the tissue processor instrument for tissue processing according to departmental procedure.
b. Embeds the processed tissue using the embedding center instrument.
c. Cuts embedded tissues for slide sections using the microtome instrument.
d. Performs routine and special stains according to departmental procedures.
e. Performs all of the above duties according to schedule to maintain appropriate workflow and timely completion.
4. Performs preventative maintenance and quality-control procedures:
a. Oils and cleans microtomes according to schedule.
b. Records temperatures on various instruments.
c. Changes the processor according to procedure.
d. Changes staining solutions according to procedure.
5. Assists MOHS surgeon with MOHS procedures. a. Prepares slides for MOHS surgeon, to enable the surgeon to provide the correct diagnosis.
b. Keeps the cryostat in working condition and meets CLIA requirements.
c. Maintains MOHS records for quality control according to CLIA standards.
d. Assures the patient slides are filed to meet CLIA requirements.
e. Monitors supplies to be ordered for MOHS surgery.
6. Contributes to the general laboratory functions and institutional needs:
a. Attends regular staff meetings and related continuing education activities.
b. Observes all hospital and laboratory policies and safety practices and maintains a safe, clean and prepared work area.
c. Strives for compatible working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and other hospital personnel.
