DEFINITION Under direct supervision, to be assigned for sound and/or lighting operations at the civic auditorium; to operate in-house civic auditorium sound equipment and to operate portable sound equipment for various activities and special events; to maintain, focus, select, and operate civic auditorium lighting equipment.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives general supervision from a Program Coordinator. Exercises no supervision.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS This is the entry level in the class series. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the position at the II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. Since this class is often used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.
Examples Of Duties
For Sound Assignments:
Operate a 32-channel sound mixing board and outboard gear and equipment.
Place and strike monitors in position for stage use.
Lay, wrap, and strike audio cables including safety taping.
Set up and strike microphones.
Patch microphones into sound mixing board.
Set up and strike audio equipment
For Lighting Assignments:
Focus a wide variety of lighting instruments.
Maintain a wide variety of lighting instruments, cables, and accessories.
Counter balance electrical components to maintain an appropriate weight balance.
Operate Light Board and Followspot.
Add or remove lighting instruments and patch the light board accordingly.
For General Assignments:
Assist with civic auditorium operations.
Assist with supervision and maintenance of civic auditorium.
Move tables and chairs.
Assist with enforcement of civic auditorium rules, regulations, and operating policies.
Answer questions and provide information to the public.
Complete logs and reports as required.
Clean lobby and empty trash cans as needed.
Clean, restock restrooms.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Learn to adjust and time spatial acoustics.
Learn to patch microphones to sound mixing boards.
For Lighting Assignments:

Learn to operate a variety of lighting equipment including light board, assorted lighting instruments, lamps, and base station/head set.
Learn theater electrical operations and techniques.
Learn to dismantle and reassemble a wide variety of lighting instruments for maintenance purposes.
Learn to design, program, and patch light plots into a light board.
Learn to hang, focus, and circuit a wide variety of lighting instruments.
Conduct work in a safe manner in accordance with established policies
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Operate modern office equipment including computer equipment and software.
Supplemental Information
Education and Experience: Equivalent to a High School diploma. Enrollment in college is desirable. Some paid or volunteer experience is desirable.
Licenses and Certifications:
Possession of a valid California Driver’s License is required for some assignments.
Possession or, or ability to obtain, First Aid and CPR certificates within three months of employment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must possess mobility to work in a standard office and/or recreational facility setting and use standard office equipment. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, climb, and walk on uneven surfaces to participate in recreational activities; and push and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds and the ability to travel to different sites and locations and be available for irregular work schedule.
ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS
Employees may work in the field and are occasionally exposed to loud noise levels, cold and/or hot temperatures, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards. Incumbents may be exposed to blood and body fluids rendering First Aid and CPR. Employees are required to wear appropriate attire for the recreation activity to which they are assigned. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
