An international energy company with U.S. headquarters in Houston seeks to hire a Head of Power Generation Transmission to support its power and natural gas businesses. This company owns a thermal and renewable power plant portfolio (PJM, ISO-NE, NYISO, and ERCOT). This position reports to the Head of Trading, who oversees a new and growing Commercial Operations team responsible for portfolio asset trading and management, optimization, transmission analytics, and profitability.
The Transmission team's key responsibilities include a combination of analytics to support commercial decisions.
Asset Trading / Portfolio Optimization - Support Asset Trading / Portfolio Optimization for natural gas and renewable power generation portfolios.
- Utilize power flow analysis and production cost modeling tools to analyze and forecast transmission- and congestion-related activities:
- Undertaking transmission and congestion-related research and analysis to assess power market conditions, identify short and long-term risks, recommend market bidding, devise CRR / FTR congestion hedging strategies, forecast basis pricing, and develop optimization strategies.
- Monitor market variables and understand marketplace federal and ISO rules and procedures.
- Analyze large data sets to quantify trading risk exposures and support decision-making related to congestion forecasts.
- Create databases to evaluate historical market data, path and portfolio selection, and portfolio risk management criteria.
Project Development & M&A - Support the company’s project development and M&A activities, including analyzing future transmission topology, congestion, and power flows for potential new asset investments inside and outside its core ISO markets and other technologies (hydrogen).
- Perform ATC calculations to determine the available transmission capacity at potential M&A and developmental locations.
General Buildout Activities - Hire, train, and mentor a Transmission team over time within a new, growing Commercial Operations team.
- Select and implement transmission analysis software.
- Collaborate with internal teams to identify and implement process improvements.
- Provide technical expertise and training to support business objectives.
Employees are required to work at least 3 days per week in the Houston office.
Educational and professional qualifications include a bachelor’s degree (master's or PhD preferred) in electrical engineering (power systems focus) with 7-10+ years’ professional experience in congestion/transmission analysis at an IPP, ISO, power trading firm, power market research firm, renewable developer, or utility; familiarity with the northeast power markets and rules (PJM, NYISO, and NEISO); strong understanding of the U.S. power grid, transmission products (ARRs, CRRs, and FTRs - physical and financial basis products), transmission product pricing, trading strategies, and power portfolio management; experience managing a team; strong modeling and programming skills; steady state power flow analysis, production cost modeling, dispatch modeling skills using PowerWorld, PSSE, DAYZER, UPLAN, PROMOD, PSO or PLEXOS, etc.; and programming skills (VBA, Python, R, or C++).
Candidates with ISO or market experience in CaISO, ERCOT, MISO, and SPP will be considered.
