The Prince George’s County Council is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Supervisor, Board of Appeals Office, grade 24, in the Legislative Branch division.
This position is INTERNAL ONLY for current Prince George's County Government merit employees. Any applications received that are not from current Prince George's County Government merit employees will not be accepted or reviewed.
About the Position
This is senior lead/supervisory level professional staff work with administrative responsibilities performed in support of a department or agency. Incumbents assigned to this class perform advanced administrative staff work for a mid-level manager or a department head in such functional areas as budget, finance, data processing, personnel and administration. Such positions may lead work in key functional areas, or may supervise an administrative services team comprised of lower level subordinate positions. Work is performed under the general supervision of a mid-level manager or department head and is evaluated as it contributes to the operating effectiveness of the department or agency to which assigned.
About the Agency
All legislative powers of the County are vested in the County Council. In addition, the County Council sits as the District Council on zoning and land use matters, and as the Board of Health on health policy matters.
Examples of Work
Manage daily office operations and systems and trains staff in the operation of the Board of Appeals (BOA) office workflows and procedures.
Maintain expert knowledge of principles and practices of public administration.
Prepare necessary documents to fulfill administrative requirements when decisions are appealed to the court.
Assign and direct employee assignments, caseload, and timelines; review work product; action deadlines for work priorities and, projects.
Provide leadership and supervision to assigned staff, provide feedback and evaluate staff performance.
Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and training in accomplishing routine and moderately complex work activities within the Board of Appeals.
Schedule BOA hearings, prepares agenda, attends hearings and meetings; record notes and votes in preparation of findings and decisions.
Draft and prepare decisions of the Board for final signature of the Chairman.
Identify key issues, potential problems, and recommend solutions to the Board for appropriate action.
Research, investigate, and compile information for special projects and produces reports based on findings.
Perform highly responsible liaison with council members, department heads, and agency staff.
Willingly and cooperatively perform tasks and duties that may not be specifically listed in the class specification or position description but are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee’s class of work.
Qualifications
Graduation from college with major course work in liberal arts, one of the social sciences, or public or business administration
Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in governmental administrative work
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:
Expert knowledge of Prince George's County Council's Legislative processes
Expert knowledge of the Board of Appeal internal operations, processes and procedures
Knowledge of Circuit Court procedures
