Job Description
The Washington Post is seeking an ambitious and innovative editor with high metabolism to drive coverage of Maryland’s state and local governments, politics and communities, a crucial role as state leaders — led by a governor with national political ambitions — confront a stagnant economy, rising crime and budgetary pressures.
We are looking for an editor with sharp news instincts and an ability to execute swift and authoritative breaking news, agenda-setting accountability reporting, and enterprising examinations of officials on the state and local level. The successful candidate will shepherd our stories about the reverberations of the Key Bridge collapse this spring and a critical and closely watched U.S. Senate race this fall that could help determine control of the chamber. Maryland is the most diverse state on the East Coast, and this editor will also help lead coverage of its communities.
Working in partnership with assignment editors across the local desk, the ideal candidate will understand how to propel news coverage that illuminates power structures and the lives of people across the state. A commitment to a variety of storytelling formats that expand our audience is vital.
Responsibilities:
Shape the team’s coverage priorities to drive scoops, sharp accountability reporting and captivating storytelling that readers cannot find anywhere else.
Elevate stories to the highest standards, from conceptualization all the way through to publication. Ensure fairness, rigor, precision and excellence in story framing and appropriate length.
Mentor and steer reporters toward their best work.
Build partnerships with teams across the local desk and newsroom to facilitate the most timely, comprehensive and visually dynamic coverage.
Optimize stories for digital success and embrace creative storytelling to identify the most compelling formats to engage our readers.
Preferred qualifications:
A track record of distinctive breaking news and enterprise reporting.
Experience with major breaking news stories, pursuing accountability targets and developing new conceptual approaches to stories.
Exceptional communication and organizational skills.
A vision for high-impact accountability coverage in the public interest.?
A collaborative mindset and eagerness to experiment.
Supervisory experience is a plus but not strictly required.
This position is based in our Washington newsroom.
Interested applicants should submit a résumé and a cover letter outlining their vision for the role to our jobs portal. All application materials can be uploaded to the same field. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by May 31 will be prioritized. Cover letters should be addressed to Executive Local Editor Jamie Stockwell and Managing Editor Matea Gold.?
