As a Maintenance Worker, you will be an integral part of this mission as you engage in a variety of tasks related to grounds maintenance and litter collection. About This Role:
The Maintenance Worker is part of a team of employees responsible for maintaining County facilities and roadways. This position may work at the County Landfill or along County roadways removing trash, litter, and other debris, as well as performing general grounds maintenance. Other routine job duties include maintaining the customer convenience center and answering customer questions.
The primary functions of this role may include, but are not limited to:
Routinely perform strenuous physical labor in all weather conditions;
Safely and properly operate hand tools, power tools, small equipment, and vehicles;
Engage customers and coworkers respectfully and courteously and maintain composure and tact when faced with difficult people or situations; and
Follow directions, complete tasks within specified timeframes, adapt well to change, and work effectively as part of a team.
Minimum Requirements:
Minimum of an 8th-grade education with the ability to read and write standard English at an 8th-grade level or higher.
Preferences:
High school diploma or GED is preferred.
At least 1 year of experience performing grounds maintenance, construction, landscaping, or other manual tasks is preferred but not required.
A minimum of 1 year experience in front-facing customer service is preferred, but not required.
Special Requirements:
Driving Requirement: Possessing and maintaining a valid Virginia driver’s license is a requirement of the position. This job also requires driving a County vehicle and may require operating equipment such as a skid steer and forklift.
Essential Service Requirement: This position is an essential employee. Responding to emergencies, inclement weather, and other issues that may impact facility operations after regular working hours, including on holidays and weekends, is required.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Requirement: This job is a safety-sensitive position that requires wearing personal protective equipment, including but not limited to safety shoes, safety vest, and hard hat.
Physical Requirement: This job is classed as Heavy Work, which is physically demanding and requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The ability to walk long distances, three or more miles per day, over rough terrain is required. The job also requires manual dexterity, standing, bending, climbing, crouching, grasping, kneeling, balancing, pulling, pushing, reaching, and lifting up to 100 pounds. The work may require repetitive motion and prolonged crouching, standing, or walking. The work is generally performed in both inside and outside environments and may be exposed to vibrations, intense noises, moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, gases, inadequate lighting, and poor ventilation. The ability to safely work in inclement weather and around vehicular traffic, heavy equipment, plants, and animals is required.
Pre-employment Requirement: Successfully passing a pre-employment physical examination is a condition of employment for this position.
Work Schedule:
Work schedules vary but are generally Monday through Friday or Tuesday through Saturday. Shift days and hours are subject to change based on business needs. Working outside of regularly scheduled hours with little or no notice may be required in the event of inclement weather or a department or County emergency.
Working overtime and some holidays and weekends may be required depending on assigned shifts, staffing levels, and workload. Employees are eligible for overtime and holiday pay.
Starting Salary Range:
$22.00 to $25.00 hourly
