The purpose of this position is to oversee the day-to-day tasks for two large, observational cohort studies of patients with sepsis, pneumonia or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), admitted to a medical ICU. The candidate will be an essential member of a team investigating the clinical risk factors, molecular phenotypes, and illness trajectories during the acute and recovery phases of ARDS, pneumonia, and sepsis, and attempting to identify specific patterns of response that might be candidates for future targeted therapy. In addition, the individual will assist with active clinical trials testing mechanical ventilator strategies, and new treatments for ARDS and acute kidney injury. The position requires regular interaction with patients and their families as part of both the consenting process and quality of life assessments.
Under the direction of the PI and the investigative team, and following training, the candidate will be responsible for: the enrollment process (screening of patients for eligibility, obtaining informed consent, abstracting data from the electronic medical record; collecting, processing and storing of biological samples); study record management; regulatory submissions (communication with the IRB, regulatory filing and responding to inquiries); assisting in the preparation of manuscripts, grant proposals, and research-related presentations; coordinating research meetings; and overseeing part-time data entry personnel. A minor part of the position involves supporting the group’s participation in interventional clinical trials, which might include biospecimen collection and processing; electronic case report form completion, and participant screening.

The Clinical Research Coordinator A will perform a range of activities in the management of several cohorts of patients with critical illness including sepsis, pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Tasks include screening and enrollment, data abstraction from the electronic medical record and recording of specific data into electronic databases, and data management activities. The candidate will interact directly with critically ill patients and their family members, to obtain research study consent, and administer questionnaires and cognitive testing. Laboratory work involving the processing of human biospecimens is also required. Support of ongoing critical care trials will be as needed. The candidate will coordinate research team meetings, oversee part-time data entry personnel, and assist in the preparation of manuscripts, grant proposals and research-related presentations. Strong organizational and time management skills, the flexibility to multi-task and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team are required.
Job Responsibilities
Screen patients for eligibility and consent potential participants into critical care cohort studies
Perform and oversee biological sample collection, processing and storage
Collect clinical data and complete electronic case report forms
Maintain study databases
Complete IRB correspondence and filings
Coordinate regular study meetings
Participate in interventional ICU trials as needed
