Seeking a Civil Engineer with 6 or more years of civil site engineering experience and leadership skills that are searching for an opportunity to join the Civil / Geotechnical Engineering (CGE) group at American Electric Power (AEP). This position offers unique career development opportunities and challenging assignments across AEP’s 11-state footprint performing civil site engineering, land development, stormwater management design, and roadway design assignments for Electric Substation, Transmission Line, and Telecommunications projects.
The primary location of this posting is in New Albany, OH
This position is classified as “Hybrid”. Hybrid employees have some, but not all, work tasks that are required to be performed from an on-site AEP location. As a hybrid employee, you will be required to report to the office three days per week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The remainder of the week should be worked from home unless there is a field assignment or otherwise directed.
Qualified candidates shall possess knowledge of civil site engineering principles through education and/or demonstrated project experience related to:
• site grading
• stormwater management
• drainage design/analysis
• roadway design
• retaining walls
• erosion and sediment control
• permitting
• surveying
Knowledge and/or experience using AutoCAD and Civil3D software is strongly preferred.
Successful candidates will possess the proven ability to assess and recommend best case civil engineering solutions and collaborate with higher level non-civil engineers and other project stakeholders in solving civil engineering related challenges in consideration of safety, performance, cost, constructability, risk, and liability.
Travel (~10%) is required for this position and will consist of trips to the field to diagnose civil engineering issues related to electric transmission lines and substations. Field assignments are generally within a 5-hour driving distance of the assigned office location. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8 hours per day. Some OT may be required, as approved.

Engineer Sr: Exhibits journey level proficiency plus advanced knowledge that enables the engineer to serve as a leader within the assigned organization. Keeps abreast of new products, developments, technologies, procedures and equipment. Understands and analyzes interrelationships between systems and component equipment. Interprets codes and regulations, and develops standards relevant to the area of assignment.
Engineer Principal: Exhibits advanced level proficiency plus advanced knowledge of a specialized technical area that enables the engineer to serve as a resource for the company in an area such as system production, underground systems, extensive control systems, thermo-hydraulic control systems, distribution standards, fossil or nuclear plant operations, etc.
2. Leadership & Guidance:
Engineer Sr: Provides guidance and exercises judgment and discretion in providing guidance and direction to other Engineers. Leads, facilitates and coordinates work activities of others within the work group, team, department, corporate entity, or those external to the company as required to perform all routine engineering work. Ensures all work activities are performed in accordance with the policies, practices, standards and rules of the company and complies with the regulations and procedures required by external agencies. Promotes engineering professionalism and standards. Coordinates and conducts training sessions.
Engineer Principal: Influences the direction of thinking throughout the organizational unit as a recognized authority in an area of expertise. Leads, facilitates and coordinates work activities of others within work group, team, department, corporate entity, or those external to the company and assumes the role of project or function manager for assigned tasks.
3. Planning & Organization Ability:
Engineer Sr: Participates in the development of plans by establishing measurable goals, objectives and requirements for specific areas of responsibility. Coordinates the development of input necessary to establish projected cost of all projects. Is proficient in use of scheduling techniques (CPM, PERT, flow charts, etc.) for budget and planning activities. Identifies and initiates appropriate corrective action when objectives are not being met.
Engineer Principal: Develops, recommends, and implements plans that include all scheduling, resource, and cost information and control required to address complex engineering problems that require the input and efforts of a wide array of entities both internal and external to the company.
4. Problem Solving & Initiative:
Engineer Sr: Identifies, clarifies, resolves, and initiates solutions to routine and/or complex problems that sometimes involve analysis of inadequate or conflicting data. Demonstrates the ability to divide problems into component steps. Consistently looks for and develops opportunities and presents new ideas and approaches.
Engineer Principal: Identifies, clarifies, resolves, and initiates solutions to complex problems that require multi-functional, or organizational, interfacing and/or multi-disciplined analytical techniques. Develops opportunities and new ideas and approaches that have system-wide impact.
5. Communication:
Engineer Sr: Coordinates the work of other engineers in an efficient and effective manner. Develops reviews or prepares reports on complex technical subjects clearly, concisely and effectively, in a manner suitable for presentation to management, professional societies, regulatory bodies, etc. Leads and facilitates meetings effectively.
Engineer Principal: Leads in the preparation and presentation of complex technical subjects, clearly, concisely, and persuasively, bringing in ancillary issues before senior management, professional organizations, regulatory bodies, etc. Projects credibility and competence on technical issues and has highly developed presentation skills.
6. Interpersonal Skills:
Engineer Sr: Possess collaborative and consensus building skills. Functions as a team leader and member. Networks upward and downward in several disciplines inside and outside the AEP system. Leverage network to get things done.
Engineer Principal: Builds teams and networks that extend through AEP, and other companies, professional organizations, regulatory agencies, and academia. Networks throughout AEP, other companies, professional organizations, and regulatory agencies.
7. Decision Making:
Engineer Sr: Makes decisions affecting plans and goals based on analysis of uncertain input and outcomes. Uses diverse approaches to make decisions in the absence of a definite framework or where few precedents exist. Can handle conflicting interests related to approaches on projects or studies. Analyzes options and risks and possesses the experience and knowledge to assess the risk of decisions and act accordingly. Makes decisions that affect the operations or results of the department and may have some impact on a major project.
Engineer Principal: Possesses the experience and knowledge to make some technical decisions based on calculated risks without management review. Makes decisions affecting long range plans and goals based on analysis of highly uncertain input and outcomes. Visualizes long-term results. Makes decisions where differences of opinion are likely to exist. Makes decisions that have an impact across organizational boundaries.
8. Business Awareness & Characteristics:
Engineer Sr: Exhibits an awareness of AEP's competitive position and how business decisions impact their organizational unit. Understands the specific goals and objectives of their individual organizational unit and is proficient in establishing measurable goals and objectives. Minimum Requirements:
Engineer Sr: Has typically acquired 6 or more years of related engineering experience along with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering in a program accredited by ABET*, or 4 years of related engineering experience along with a Master’s degree or PhD in Civil Engineering from a program accredited by ABET*; Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico** is encouraged and preferred
Acceptable alternatives are (1) a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (non-ABET), plus a Professional Engineers (PE) license in any state of the U.S. or (2) a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (non-ABET) plus a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor’s program.
Engineer Principal: Has typically acquired 8 or more years of related engineering experience along with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering in a program accredited by ABET*; or 6 years of related engineering experience along with a Master's or PhD in Civil Engineering from a program accredited by ABET*. Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico** is required for this position unless approval to waive this requirement is given by the organization's EVP.
Acceptable alternatives are (1) a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (non-ABET), plus a Professional Engineers (PE) license in any state of the U.S. or (2) a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (non-ABET) plus a Master's degree or PhD in Civil Engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor's program.
