The mission of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation, and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research and prevention, and through education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees and the public.
The primary focus of the VP, Digital Operations is to assure a robust and an enabling digital ecosystem for the entire organization through broad stakeholder engagement/sensing, as well as to ensure excellence in operations and service delivery. The VP, Digital Operations achieves this by partnering with members of the Technology, Data and Innovation (TDI) enterprise, as well as teams supporting various clinical, academic, research, business administration and education programs across MD Anderson to develop a strategy and execution plan for how digital technologies will enable the institution's mission. The VP, Digital Operations brings deep expertise and experience in understanding and managing digital technologies and directs the operations of the Division of Digital Operations and Infrastructure (currently the Information Services Division). The role also is responsible for promoting and supporting the effective use of digital technology throughout the institution.
Activities of the division are closely linked with digital technology efforts, which operate throughout the institution in support of clinical, academic, research, business administrative and education functions. As such, the VP, Digital Operations is expected to maintain a close and effective working relationship with key leaders in these areas. KEY FUNCTIONS
The VP, Digital Operations reports to the SrVP, Chief Technology and Digital Officer and works collaboratively with members of the Technology, Data, and Innovation (TDI) portfolio to digitally-enable the institution’s mission. The VP will work closely and in conjunction with senior institutional leadership across all mission and support areas to advance the goals of MD Anderson. Expectations in critical aspects of the role are outlined below.
1. Management This individual demonstrates a keen focus on the employee experience. Be an active participant in and influence executive leadership discussions. Leads and/or actively engages in institutional committees to shape direction. Senses for opportunities to leverage TDI talent and/or tools to solve problems within and across the institution. Works closely with TDI executives to ensure the collective teams are aware of and are leveraging the broad base of talent and experiences within TDI. Has an active role in the process of procurement and in the management of procured technologies and services. Works closely with the Chief Cybersecurity Officer to assure responsiveness of digital operations and infrastructure teams to cybersecurity vulnerability management. Works closely with the Chief Business Continuity Officer to assure business continuity in case of loss of digital capabilities.
2. Technology Leadership Develops technology strategies that are designed to be robust for a large-scale enterprise. Optimizes infrastructure to ensure maximum uptime and availability. Seeks opportunities to fully leverage and adopt enterprise-wide digital platforms. Develops relationships with key vendors to influence product development, as well as ensure the institution benefits from the best service possible. To deliver an outstanding and seamless digital experience while constantly seeking to eliminate or minimize friction in the products and services delivered. Works closely with the Chief Cybersecurity Officer to develop and implement tools and processes that provide maximum protection of the institution’s digital infrastructure. Engages business leaders and subject matter experts in digital technology selection and procurement processes.
3. Financial Stewardship Sharp focus on and understanding of the budget and financial status across TDI and for projects in the Information Technology Executive Committee (ITEC). Knowledgeable of the financial levers across ITEC and associated institutional IT accounts. Works closely with the TDI Project Management Office and financial teams to develop a budget and track accordingly to meet the needs of the institution. Stays abreast of the institution’s financial reports and practices our core value of Stewardship in technology management. 4. Talent Development Seeks opportunities to mentor talent across TDI and the institution. Ensures division’s teams are developing staff to enable the technology strategies in place today or planned for tomorrow. Identifies leadership opportunities across TDI to challenge our talented people and help them grow. Supports early development of the talent pipeline through extern and intern programs.
5. Representation Serves and represents the institution on industry, state, or The University of Texas System boards, committees, or councils to help shape and influence direction and strategies. Consistently seeks to understand ways to influence the development and/or enhancement of products and services that can have a positive impact on the institution’s mission to end cancer.
In cooperation with other members of the TDI enterprise, represents the institution regarding information and digital technology activities at the local, state, national, and international levels. This will require traveling to sites outside of the Houston area and, upon return, arranging for appropriate analysis and presentation of information.
Serves as an institutional representative to The University of Texas System committees, task forces and professional organizations concerning digital technology. Also serves as the institution's representative in technology matters relating to the Texas Department of Information Resources. Conduct administrative and business activities consistent with the highest standards of administrative and business practice.
REQUIREMENTS
Required Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school or equivalent. Preferred Education: Master’s degree (in science or technology)
Required Experience: Ten (10) years of progressive management experience working in large organizations to manage digital technologies (e.g., hospital, university, or government organization). The individual must be technologically proficient in digital technologies and should have a strong track record in large-scale project management.
Preferred Experience: Experience in the health care setting and in the development, deployment, and management of digital technologies.
