The Associate Director of Underwriting will manage a team of ASO underwriters. They will provide leadership to and are accountable for the performance of their team supporting the West Region. Additionally, they will serve as a technical resource on unique topics and share their knowledge with the broader ASO underwriting teams. The Associate Director of Underwriting will, in collaboration with market leads, develop strategies, execution plans, and help drive organizational priorities using sound underwriting principles, financial and statistical modeling, and trend projections to lead and/or support the organizations goals.

Primary Responsibilities:
- Balance customer, business and/or health plan needs or requests with company's profitability goals and against current capabilities, capacity to deliver, and internal guidelines and determine appropriate actions or decisions
- Balance customer, business and/or health plan needs or requests against external guidelines and regulations (e.g., HIPAA; PPACA) and determine appropriate actions or decisions
- Review and discuss with appropriate stakeholders the case characteristics (e.g., size; financial impact; products offered; standalone vs. multiple products) prepared by staff to mitigate potential risks
- Communicate and collaborate with internal stakeholders (e.g., actuarial team; product group) to prepare for case/Delegation of Authority (DOA) review; Balance risk-based decisions with the overall business strategy
- Work with employees, teams, or other applicable groups to ensure Underwriting financial targets are being met while balancing revenue goals with membership targets when determining pricing decisions
- Ensure Compliance with Policies, Procedures, Guidelines, and Regulations as well as consistent interpretation and application of specific Underwriting guidelines, policies, and procedures
- Stay abreast of and communicate changes in Underwriting policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulations
- Demonstrate understanding of how Underwriting tools, processes, and systems operate and collaborate to assist in the development and Implementation of Underwriting Solutions based on customers needs
- Analyze book of business data to determine possible solutions (e.g., implement new product; modify pricing; change methodology or process) and work with relevant groups (e.g., actuarial; compliance) to implement changes
- Gather information from different sources and databases to analyze key indicators (e.g., revenue yield; profitability; persistency; experience)
- Collaborate with internal workgroups (e.g., healthcare economics; actuarial; finance) to forecast financial targets (e.g., revenue; claims; BCR)

Required Qualifications:
- 10+ years of experience in healthcare underwriting for any variety of products: PPO, HMO, self-funded, ASO/fully insured, group or individual
- Demonstrated leadership (e.g., projects, workgroups, or direct management)
- Possible travel up to 10%
Preferred Qualifications:
- Management experience
- Experience presenting financial and risk parameters to leadership
- Intermediate level of proficiency with MS Office suite (including Word, Excel, Access. and PowerPoint)
- Demonstrated excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
